Chapter_90
Leah, however, was undeterred by her mother’s warnings. She was fixated on the pink diamond ring, her desire for it outweighing any concerns Kathleen had. “But Mom, it’s such a rare piece! And the meaning behind it, a symbol of love. I can’t let this opportunity slip away,” she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Kathleen sighed, exasperated but realizing she couldn’t change Leah’s mind. “Fine, but don’t overdo it. I don’t want any trouble tonight.”
With a nod, Leah went up to the auction podium, ready to make her bid. The auctioneer, having noticed her enthusiasm, called out, “We’re now starting the bidding for this exquisite Heartthrob diamond ring. Who will start us off with an opening bid?”
Leah raised her paddle almost instantly, her voice confident as she called out, “Ten million.”
The room quieted, and murmurs spread among the guests. Some were surprised by her boldness, others intrigued. The bidding began in earnest, and soon the price quickly rose higher. Leah’s focus was unwavering as she raised her bid each time, determined to secure the ring.
Meanwhile, Micah had been watching the scene unfold, his attention shifting from Sadie to the auction as the competitive energy in the room intensified. He caught Sadie’s eye and smiled, though his expression was enigmatic.
“Are you enjoying yourself?” he asked softly, leaning in so only she could hear.
Sadie, still recovering from the earlier tension, gave him a tight smile. “It’s… a bit overwhelming, but yes. It’s hard to take it all in,” she replied, her voice faltering slightly.
Micah’s smile remained, though his gaze never left the auction. “You handle it well,” he commented, his tone both flattering and calculated. “But you should know, tonight isn’t just about the jewels. It’s about connections—connections that could change everything for you.”
Sadie didn’t respond right away. Her mind was too tangled in the events of the night, particularly Janet’s failed attempt to expose her, and the strange feeling she had about the people around her. But Micah’s words lingered, adding a layer of complexity to everything she’d been thinking.
Back at the auction, Leah’s bid had reached twenty-five million dollars, and the competition was fierce. Some of the other bidders had dropped out, but one person remained determined. Micah’s old rival, a well-known businessman with a reputation for playing dirty, was among them.
“Thirty million,” came the rival’s voice, sharp and challenging.
Leah, now even more determined, locked eyes with the rival across the room. “Forty million,” she called out, not backing down.
The tension in the room grew palpable as the stakes soared higher. Kathleen stood at the edge of her seat, her eyes darting between Leah and the rival. She wasn’t sure whether to feel proud of her daughter’s tenacity or nervous about the lengths Leah was willing to go to for a piece of jewelry.
Micah, noticing the escalating tension, finally leaned back in his seat, his eyes glinting with interest. This was no longer just an auction—it was a game of wills.
As the bids continued to rise, Sadie couldn’t help but wonder what the real stakes of the night were. The ring, the jewelry, even the auction itself—all of it felt like a distraction from something much deeper. Something Micah was subtly pulling her into without her full awareness. She felt the weight of it in the air, and though she wanted to focus on the excitement around her, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was about to become entangled in something far more dangerous than a mere auction.
