Chapter_44
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat as she locked eyes with Micah. His presence in the hallway was commanding, and the way he observed the scene made it clear that he was in control of the situation. The mockery in his smile was chilling, and Sadie couldn’t help but feel the weight of his gaze settle on her.
Ronan, still holding her protectively, shifted uncomfortably as Micah’s eyes narrowed. “Is everything in order here?” Micah’s voice was smooth, but there was an underlying edge to it, one that made Sadie’s stomach twist.
Before anyone could respond, Vincent, standing beside Micah, spoke up. “Mr. Clemens, there was an accident. Mr. Potter was just trying to protect Miss Sadie.” He glanced briefly at Ronan’s wound, a hint of concern in his eyes, but it quickly vanished when he looked back at Micah.
Sadie felt a rush of embarrassment flood her cheeks. This is so embarrassing, she thought. She had barely managed to compose herself after the chaos, but now with Micah’s icy stare fixed on her, it felt like everything had gone wrong.
Ronan, sensing her discomfort, gave her a reassuring smile, though his brow was still furrowed in pain. “It’s really nothing,” he said, brushing off the injury. “Sadie’s fine, that’s all that matters.”
Sadie, still frozen in place, managed to find her voice. “Yes, I’m fine. It was just… unexpected.” Her gaze flicked back to Micah, but she quickly looked away, not wanting to meet his eyes.
Micah didn’t respond immediately. He took a slow step forward, his eyes scanning the scene with a careful, calculating look. “I see,” he said, finally breaking the silence. “Perhaps, Mr. Potter, you should be more careful next time. We wouldn’t want a repeat of… this.” His tone was laced with amusement, but the underlying threat was unmistakable.
Ronan nodded, his jaw tightening slightly as he stood up straighter, clearly not wanting to show any weakness in front of Micah. “Understood, Mr. Clemens.”
Sadie felt a flicker of tension in the air as Micah’s gaze slid from Ronan to her. His eyes were cold, unreadable, and yet there was something about the way he studied her that made her feel vulnerable. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but it was as if he were evaluating her, deciding just how much to care about her well-being.
Finally, Micah turned his attention to Vincent. “Make sure Mr. Potter is properly looked after, but discreetly. We don’t need any unnecessary attention,” he ordered, his voice hard.
Vincent nodded quickly, motioning for the bodyguards to assist Ronan. As they moved to escort him away, Micah’s eyes flicked back to Sadie.
“Sadie,” he said, his voice carrying a certain finality, “I expect you to be more careful in the future. We wouldn’t want any more… disruptions.” His gaze lingered on her a moment longer, the coldness in it making her feel like a pawn in a game she didn’t fully understand.
She nodded stiffly. “Yes, Mr. Clemens.”
As he turned to leave, Micah’s steps were slow, deliberate, as though he had more to say but had chosen not to. Sadie stood there, still processing what had just happened. Her chest was tight with unease, and her mind raced.
Why did Micah act like that? She thought about his words—how he had made a point to address the incident, but also how he’d kept his distance from her. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something more was at play here, that Micah was always watching, always calculating.
And then there’s Ronan… The protective, almost possessive way he had shielded her sent a rush of conflicting emotions through her. Why did he do that?
Sadie’s mind was spinning, but she forced herself to refocus. I need to stay calm, she reminded herself. One thing at a time.
She glanced over at Ronan, who was being led away by the bodyguards, still looking a bit weary but determined. As he turned back to offer her a reassuring nod, Sadie couldn’t help but feel the weight of her choices ahead. She was caught in the crossfire of too many conflicting interests, and she didn’t know how long she could keep pretending everything was fine.
But for now, all she could do was keep moving forward. One step at a time.
