Chapter_99
Micah listened quietly, his expression hard to read, but there was an unmistakable flicker of interest in his eyes as Sadie spoke about her boss. A few moments passed before he finally spoke, his voice laced with a hint of amusement. “So, you’re afraid of this man? A man who has all the power and wealth, but you think he’s going to discard you like that? You really have low confidence in yourself.”
Sadie, feeling a bit flustered by his sharp comment, crossed her arms. “It’s not about confidence. It’s about reality. People like him don’t keep people like me around unless it’s for some short-term convenience. Once the novelty wears off, it’s over.”
Micah’s gaze softened slightly, but there was still a hardness in his words. “You’re selling yourself short.” He leaned back against the wall, watching her carefully, as if weighing her every word. “You think you’re nothing more than someone’s plaything? That’s the problem. You don’t see your own worth.”
Sadie shifted uncomfortably, not used to hearing Micah speak like this. His words felt oddly… protective. But she couldn’t let herself get too caught up in it. “That’s just how the world works. People use each other. It’s not about worth, it’s about what you can offer.”
Micah let out a breath, a mixture of exasperation and something else—a strange, unspoken emotion flickering in his eyes. “Maybe you’re right, in a way. But that doesn’t mean you should just let people walk all over you. You have more to offer than you think.” He paused before adding, almost under his breath, “You just need to see it.”
Sadie swallowed hard, unsure of how to respond. Her heart was beating faster now, and the tension between them was growing more palpable. She opened her mouth to say something, but Micah cut her off with a swift change of subject, clearly not wanting to delve too deeply into this territory.
“So,” he said, leaning forward again with a sharp edge to his voice. “You want me to pretend to be your boyfriend. But let me make this clear: I’m not some pawn you can use whenever you feel like it. You’ll have to pay the price for that favor. And it’s not going to be cheap.”
Sadie raised an eyebrow, half amused, half wary. “What do you mean by ‘pay the price’?”
Micah gave her a mischievous smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “You’ll figure it out. But you’d better keep your end of the bargain, Sadie.” His tone was firm, but there was an unmistakable challenge behind his words.
Sadie hesitated, but then nodded, thinking about her situation and realizing that this might be her only option for getting out of the mess she had created. “Fine,” she said, her voice steady but with a hint of reluctance. “I’ll do whatever it takes. But you have to understand, this is just a temporary arrangement. After this, we go our separate ways. Got it?”
Micah’s smirk deepened. “We’ll see about that,” he replied cryptically, before turning to leave. “Just remember, you asked for this.”
Sadie watched him walk away, feeling a strange mix of relief and unease. This whole situation was more complicated than she had anticipated, but there was no turning back now.
