Chapter_27
Micah leaned back in his seat, his mind racing despite the nagging discomfort of his cold. The case at hand was far more pressing than his own health, though his body felt like it was betraying him with every sneeze. Rylan’s report had given him a glimpse into the next step of the investigation, but it also raised more questions. Who was the child, and what was the significance of the chip being handed off in such a seemingly random place?
Andrew, sensing his employer’s growing frustration, didn’t waste time in responding. “I’ll get a team on it immediately. We’ll track down the child and bring them in for questioning.”
Micah waved him off, his mind already turning over possibilities. The chip, now in the hands of a toddler, had to be part of something bigger, something he couldn’t yet see clearly. But he knew better than to let something slip through his fingers. The situation was delicate—too many parties were involved, and each of them had their own agenda. His thoughts drifted back to Sadie. Despite the irritation she caused him, her presence had been oddly… unsettling. Was it possible her involvement in this mess was more than just coincidental?
As the car sped through the city, his thoughts were interrupted by a particularly violent sneeze. Micah cursed under his breath, wiping his nose and shooting a glare at the tissue Andrew handed him.
“Do you need to reschedule anything, sir? You don’t seem… well,” Andrew suggested cautiously.
“Nothing,” Micah snapped, his irritation palpable. “Keep me updated on the child’s location, and make sure the search is discreet. I don’t want anyone outside of our circle knowing about this.”
“Understood, sir.”
The car fell into silence once more, the weight of the day pressing down on Micah. His thoughts kept circling back to Sadie, her stubbornness, her insistence on pushing his buttons. Why did she keep coming back into his thoughts? He knew he didn’t need her complicating matters, but somehow, her image—her defiance, her wit—kept haunting him.
Meanwhile, Sadie’s day was shaping up to be just as grueling. The cold had settled deeper into her bones, but she still forced herself through the motions at the office. The constant sneezing, the watery eyes—it all made the hours drag on slower than ever. The distraction of her earlier thoughts about Micah and his mysterious dealings only added to her growing frustration. She barely managed to concentrate on her work, the tension of the previous night still gnawing at her. Every time she tried to focus, her mind would inevitably wander back to him.
‘What was I even thinking?’ she fumed silently. ‘Why did I let things get so complicated?’
Her thoughts were interrupted by a call from her boss—again.
“Sadie,” his voice was cold, as usual. “I need you to meet with the client today. And make sure you have everything ready for the presentation by the end of the day.”
Her stomach churned. She wasn’t sure how much more she could take of his endless demands. The stress of keeping up with the unpredictable shifts in her life, coupled with the emotional toll of the night before, made her feel like she was on the edge of breaking. Still, she held it together, masking her discomfort behind a polite response.
“Of course, I’ll handle it,” she replied, her voice hoarse but steady.
As the day wore on, the lingering questions about Micah began to slip further into the background, replaced by a deep, gnawing unease. She wasn’t sure if it was the cold or something else, but there was something about the tension between them that felt unresolved.
Back at the office, Sadie managed to push through the tasks at hand, but as evening approached, she couldn’t help but wonder: What would tomorrow bring? Would she face more of the same, or had she already crossed a line from which there was no return?
The thought of Micah lingered in the back of her mind.
