Chapter_54
Sadie hugged Mia tightly, her heart heavy with the realization of the danger they might still be facing. Noah’s words echoed in her mind. They will come looking for us…
Her thoughts raced, but she tried to keep her voice calm for her children. “It’s okay, Mia. We’ll be okay. We just need to be smart.”
Nathan’s brow furrowed. “So, they’re going to be mad that the chip isn’t in the box, and then they’ll come after us?” he asked, trying to make sense of the situation.
“Yes, exactly.” Noah nodded. “The VIC Group will realize that they were misled and they’ll stop at nothing to find out what really happened to the chip. And they’ll probably come after the people who were involved, including us.”
Brenda’s face tightened with concern as she stepped forward. “Sadie, we can’t just sit here and wait for them to come. They won’t stop until they get what they want. You need to be prepared.”
Sadie nodded, her mind already spinning with possibilities. “What do we do? How do we protect ourselves?” she asked, trying to hold onto a shred of calm.
Andrew’s voice suddenly came through, interrupting the quiet tension in the room. “Sadie, it’s Andrew. We have a plan in place. You need to come to the safe house. It’s the only way to make sure your family is secure.”
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat. The safe house. The thought of leaving her home, leaving everything behind, made her stomach churn. But she knew Andrew was right. There was no other choice.
“Okay, I’m coming,” she said, her voice steady despite the chaos inside. She looked at her children, seeing their wide eyes full of fear, and gave them a reassuring smile. “We’re going to be safe. I promise.”
Mia clung to her, still trembling, but Sadie gently stroked her hair. “We’re going to stick together. You and Nathan, both of you are so brave. And Coco too,” she added with a smile, glancing at the parrot now perched on the shelf. “We’ll get through this.”
Noah’s sharp eyes caught sight of the parrot again. “Coco’s the key to all this, isn’t she?” he said thoughtfully. “They wanted the chip, but they didn’t know Coco wasn’t the one who had it.”
“Yeah,” Nathan added, “They thought the chip was inside the box, but it was just Coco’s egg all along. It was just a mix-up.”
Brenda’s face softened, but a slight concern still flickered in her eyes. “But they’re not going to give up. And now they know about the egg too. What if they come after Coco?”
Sadie’s face grew serious. “We’ll keep Coco close. No one is taking her from us.” She turned to the children. “You two stay with me. Don’t let anyone out of your sight.”
Andrew’s voice came through the phone once more. “Sadie, the car is waiting. Time is running out. We can’t let them catch up with you.”
With a deep breath, Sadie nodded. “We’re leaving now.” She turned to Brenda. “Please, stay with us. I need your help to keep the kids safe.”
Brenda nodded, determination in her eyes. “Of course, Sadie. I’m with you all the way.”
The family gathered what they could, preparing for the unknown. Coco, oblivious to the dangers that loomed over them, chirped softly in Sadie’s arms as they made their way out the door.
The night was quiet, but the silence felt heavy, as if the calm before the storm. As they stepped out of the house, Sadie looked up at the dark sky, her thoughts a whirlwind of fear and resolve. They will stop at nothing to get what they want. But I will protect my family at any cost.
The safe house loomed ahead, a temporary refuge from the chaos that threatened to engulf them. But even as they neared it, Sadie knew that the real battle was just beginning.
