Chapter_6
The tension in the elevator thickened with every passing second. The cool air made Sadie’s skin prickle, the chill crawling down her spine as she felt the weight of Micah’s presence behind her.
From the mirror, she could see his eyes, sharp and unyielding, locked on her every move. His gaze was like a predator’s, cold and calculating, as though she were nothing more than prey caught in his sights. Sadie’s breath caught in her throat as she desperately willed the elevator to descend faster.
Please, just let the doors open, she thought, her nerves fraying. The numbers on the display were ticking down slowly: 12, 11, 10… Each floor felt like an eternity.
As the elevator descended, Sadie could feel Micah’s proximity. His tall, commanding figure seemed to close the gap, and her body stiffened with unease.
When the elevator finally reached her floor with a soft ding, she wasted no time. The doors opened, and she bolted, almost tripping over her own feet in her rush to escape the confined space. But in her haste, she misjudged her step and crashed hard onto the floor with a loud thud.
A chorus of surprised exclamations rang out from her colleagues, who had just exited the staff elevator. Some muffled laughter followed, and Sadie’s face flushed with embarrassment. She wanted to melt into the floor and disappear.
Hurriedly, she pushed herself up, cheeks burning with humiliation. She could feel her pulse hammering in her ears as she quickly covered her face with her hands and scurried away.
Micah’s gaze lingered on her retreating figure, a small, amused smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He had been watching her every move, and for some reason, it seemed to entertain him.
