Chapter_10
Sadie frowned, still feeling uneasy about the entire situation. “I don’t trust you, Micah,” she said, her voice tight. “I can’t just let you disappear without making sure you’re going to stick to our deal.”
Micah chuckled softly, his voice smooth. “You don’t have to worry, Sadie. You’ll get your money, just like I promised.” There was a hint of amusement in his tone, but it didn’t help calm the storm brewing inside her.
“I’m serious. If you try anything funny, I’ll make sure everyone knows who you are and what you’ve done.” Sadie’s grip on her phone tightened as she leaned against the doorframe, her heart pounding. She was fighting to keep her composure, but every part of her wanted to lash out.
Micah’s response came with an air of nonchalance, as if he found her threat amusing. “Don’t worry, I’m not planning to run. I like the idea of you depending on me. It’s a little… fun.” His voice dropped a bit, the words lingering in the air like a challenge.
Sadie could feel her pulse quicken. She hated how comfortable he sounded. “I’m not playing games, Micah,” she shot back, trying to control the tremor in her voice. “I’ll be watching you. Don’t think you can just get away with this.”
Micah’s smirk was audible through the phone. “You’ll get your money, Sadie. And if it’s any consolation, I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.” With that, he ended the call.
Sadie stood there, staring at the screen in disbelief. Every instinct told her to back away, to find a way out of this dangerous game she was caught in. But she couldn’t. Not with her babies to think about, not with the mounting pressure of survival pressing down on her. She had no choice but to play along, for now.
The unease remained, gnawing at her, but she pushed it aside, focusing instead on her next move. She would hold Micah to his word—no matter what it took.
