Chapter_55
The silence that followed the question felt like an eternity. Everyone held their breath, weapons ready, hearts pounding in their chests. The knock came again, louder this time, more insistent.
Brenda tightened her grip on the kitchen knife, her knuckles white with tension. Noah and Nathan exchanged glances, their expressions serious. Mia pressed her face into her mother’s side, her body trembling.
“It’s me,” a voice called out from the other side of the door.
Sadie froze, her mind racing. Who could it be?
“Who are you?” she asked cautiously, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling beneath the surface.
“It’s Andrew,” the voice responded, calm but urgent. “It’s safe. We need to talk.”
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat. Andrew. He was with the VIC Group, and although she trusted him, there was still a lingering doubt in her mind. She hesitated for a moment before signaling Brenda to lower the knife.
“Brenda, let’s see who it is. Be ready.”
Brenda stepped back from the door, still holding the knife, but with a more relaxed stance. Noah and Nathan also moved aside, positioning themselves near the door. Sadie cautiously approached, her hand hovering over the doorknob.
She took a deep breath and swung the door open, revealing Andrew standing there, looking more disheveled than usual. His eyes scanned the room quickly, taking in the tense atmosphere and the family’s weapons before locking eyes with Sadie.
“Andrew,” Sadie said, trying to keep her voice steady. “What’s going on? Why are you here?”
Andrew’s expression softened. “We need to talk. It’s not safe for you and your family anymore. The VIC Group knows everything now. They know the chip was never in that box, and they’re looking for answers.”
Sadie’s heart sank. So they figured it out already.
“We have to leave immediately,” Andrew continued, his tone urgent. “They’ll be here soon, and we don’t have much time.”
Brenda stepped forward, still cautious. “What exactly is going on, Andrew? We need to know more before we make any decisions.”
Andrew glanced at the family, his expression growing more serious. “You don’t have much time. The VIC Group wants that chip more than anything, and they won’t stop until they have it. You’ve already become targets, and if you stay here, it’ll be even worse.”
Mia whimpered softly, her small body pressed against Sadie’s side. “Mommy, what should we do?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Sadie looked down at her children, her heart heavy with the weight of their fear. She knew they couldn’t stay here. The danger was too real. “We’ll leave,” she said, her voice firm. “We’ll go with Andrew and stay somewhere safe.”
Noah nodded, his usual seriousness cutting through the tension. “Let’s go, then. We don’t want to be here when they arrive.”
Sadie glanced at the others. “Brenda, you and the kids, stay close. We’re sticking together.”
Brenda nodded in agreement, clutching the knife with one hand and her phone with the other, ready to act if anything went wrong.
Andrew led the way, moving quickly but carefully as he led them out of the house. The family followed closely behind, each step feeling like a race against time. The world outside was eerily quiet, but Sadie couldn’t shake the feeling that danger was lurking just around the corner.
As they approached Andrew’s car, Sadie glanced over her shoulder at the house one last time, a sense of loss filling her heart. But there was no time to dwell on it now. They were about to embark on a dangerous journey, one that would take them far from everything they knew, and they couldn’t afford to look back.
