Chapter_63
Sadie’s words hung in the air as the conversation took a turn. She could feel the tension in her chest rise, the realization of her own suspicions becoming a little clearer with each passing second.
“Sadie,” Micah’s voice broke through her thoughts, a trace of amusement lacing his tone. “You sure about that? You really think he’s into you?”
She hesitated, her fingers gripping the phone tightly. It felt ridiculous to even say out loud, but something about Micah’s teasing made it hard to dismiss. “Well, it makes sense, doesn’t it? Why else would he be so… present? It’s like he’s always there when I least expect it. And today, when I was injured, he even arranged for a private doctor.”
“Sounds like he’s trying to show you he cares,” Micah replied with a touch of sarcasm. “Maybe he’s just being… professional?”
Sadie scoffed. “Professional? Who brings an employee to their home just because they got hurt? That’s not professionalism, that’s borderline obsession.”
Micah chuckled on the other end of the line. “You’re reading too much into this. Maybe he just doesn’t want you to bleed out in the middle of a hallway.”
Sadie rolled her eyes, even though Micah couldn’t see her. “Don’t you dare try to downplay this. I’m telling you, it’s got all the signs of a secret crush. He’s just playing it cool.”
“Well, if he really likes you, I’d say you’re in a tough spot. A boss who likes their subordinate? That’s a messy situation.”
Sadie let out a long sigh. “That’s what I’m worried about. What if he thinks I like him back? What if he thinks I’m playing some game?”
Micah’s voice dropped to a more serious tone. “You’re not playing any game, right? If you’re worried, just keep things professional.”
“I am,” Sadie said, though there was a slight waver in her voice. “But the more I try to keep my distance, the more I feel like he’s pushing harder. It’s like… he wants me to notice him.”
There was a long pause on the other end before Micah spoke again. “You’re overthinking it. But if you’re really that concerned, you should just talk to him directly.”
Sadie snorted. “Oh, sure. Just tell my boss, ‘Hey, I think you might have a crush on me. Cut it out.’ That’ll go over well.”
Micah laughed softly. “Well, maybe not exactly like that. But you have to admit, the tension’s there, right?”
“Yeah, it’s there alright.” Sadie sighed deeply, her mind swimming with all the complexities of her situation. “It’s like everything is a game. And I don’t know the rules.”
“Sometimes it’s not about the rules,” Micah said, his voice softening slightly. “Sometimes it’s about figuring out what you really want.”
Sadie stared at the ceiling, the weight of the situation pressing on her. What did she want? She had no idea anymore. The lines between professional and personal were becoming blurred, and she was trapped between playing it cool and facing something she didn’t quite understand.
“I need to go,” Sadie said, cutting the conversation short before it could spiral any further.
Micah didn’t protest. “Take care of yourself. And don’t forget about the chip.”
The reminder was sharp, and Sadie’s heart skipped a beat. She had nearly forgotten in the midst of everything else, but now the weight of that secret loomed larger than ever.
“Yeah, I haven’t forgotten,” she said, her voice a little quieter than before. “I’ll be in touch.”
“Good. Don’t get caught up in your boss’s games.”
Sadie hung up the phone, her thoughts a whirlwind of confusion. Micah’s teasing words echoed in her mind, but it wasn’t just the chip or her boss’s attention that was troubling her. It was the growing tension between what she wanted and what she knew she couldn’t have.
And as she lay back down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was walking a thin line—one that could either lead to everything she desired, or to something she wasn’t quite prepared for.
