Chapter_61
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of Micah’s voice as he entered the room. She quickly glanced at Dahlia, who was quietly adjusting the medical equipment, then turned her attention back to the door. Micah’s presence filled the space with a weight that made her pulse race, yet she couldn’t quite place the emotions swirling inside her.
Micah stepped into the room, his gaze immediately landing on her. His eyes, dark and intense, flickered over her body for a brief moment before returning to her face, as though ensuring she was truly alright. His usual controlled expression softened just enough to show a hint of concern, though it quickly returned to its sharp, cold demeanor.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice quieter than she expected, but still commanding. He crossed the room with purposeful strides, his gaze unwavering.
Sadie hesitated before answering, her throat dry. “I’m… alright. Just a little sore.” She glanced at her bandaged shoulder and neck brace, then met his eyes. “Thank you… for saving me.”
Micah didn’t respond immediately, his eyes darkening with something unreadable. He stood still for a moment, studying her, before speaking again, his tone more deliberate.
“I should have never let you get in that situation,” he said quietly, almost to himself. Then, looking at her with intensity, he added, “You don’t belong in danger like that.”
Sadie felt a wave of mixed emotions rise in her chest. She wasn’t sure how to respond to his words, unsure if he was speaking out of genuine concern or if there was something more beneath his words. She had never felt this vulnerable around him before—physically, emotionally. The situation, her injuries, and his close proximity all seemed to blur the lines between gratitude and unease.
“Where is the chip?” His sudden question cut through her thoughts, the weight of it settling in the air like a storm cloud.
Sadie’s eyes widened, her breath hitching in her throat. Her mind raced, her hand instinctively reaching for the small bag next to her pillow.
Micah’s eyes didn’t leave hers, his gaze unreadable but sharp. “Did you think I wouldn’t notice?”
In that moment, Sadie’s heart seemed to stop. The chip—it was the only thing that truly mattered now. If Micah found it, everything would be exposed, everything she had worked for would unravel. She had no choice but to lie.
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Sadie’s voice trembled, though she tried her best to sound calm, masking the panic beneath her words.
Micah’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, but he didn’t press further. Instead, he gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, as if accepting her answer for now, but something about his silence made her uneasy.
“Get some rest,” Micah said, his voice softening just a touch. “You’ll need it to recover fully.”
Sadie nodded numbly, her eyes flickering between the bag containing the chip and Micah’s unreadable expression. She was terrified of what would happen if he found out the truth. Would he think she was involved with the criminals? Would he think she was hiding something far more dangerous?
“I’ll leave you for now,” Micah added, his gaze lingering a moment longer before he turned toward the door. “But I’ll be back later.”
As he exited, the sound of the door clicking shut echoed in the room. Sadie’s breath caught in her throat, and her hands began to tremble uncontrollably. She quickly reached for the bag, her heart racing.
But the moment her fingers brushed the chip inside, a wave of uncertainty washed over her. What would happen if she kept it hidden? Would Micah ever trust her again if the truth came out?
With a deep sigh, Sadie closed her eyes, feeling the weight of her decisions pressing down on her. She was caught between her loyalty to the company, the dangerous web of secrets she had been caught in, and the undeniable pull she felt toward Micah.
She was on the brink of losing everything—or gaining more than she ever imagined.
