Chapter_80
Sadie’s face flushed as she caught a glimpse of Micah’s faint smile in the rearview mirror. She quickly turned her gaze downward, trying to focus on the small cake she was eating, but the sensation of his eyes on her made her feel incredibly self-conscious.
“You’re hungry, huh?” Micah’s voice broke the silence, smooth and almost teasing.
Sadie froze, her fork halfway to her mouth. She quickly set it down and straightened up, suddenly aware of how much she had been indulging herself. “I—I haven’t eaten all day,” she stammered, not daring to meet his eyes.
Micah didn’t say anything else, but the smile still lingered on his lips, almost as if he found her discomfort amusing. He leaned back further in the seat, his arms folded, and closed his eyes as though drifting into sleep.
But Sadie wasn’t fooled. The tension in the air was palpable. Despite his seemingly relaxed demeanor, she knew that Micah was always calculating, always aware of everything around him. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was just playing some sort of game with her, trying to get a reaction.
Her thoughts kept racing as the car continued down the road. What did he mean earlier with his words? “Your body, only I can see.” Those words sent chills down her spine, but they also ignited a flicker of something else—something she couldn’t quite put into words. Fear? Desire? Both?
The car ride felt like an eternity, but eventually, it slowed down and came to a halt outside a luxurious venue. A grand gala. The lights outside were blinding, and the sound of laughter and chatter could be heard even from inside the vehicle. Micah remained silent as the car door was opened for them, his cool, commanding presence unmistakable.
“Let’s go,” he finally said, as if on cue. His voice had lost its teasing edge, replaced with the firm tone he often used when giving orders.
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat as she stepped out of the car, her heels clicking against the pavement. She had to steady herself, not just physically, but mentally as well. She was stepping into his world now—this high-society, luxurious bubble where everyone knew their place. And somehow, despite everything, she had become a part of it.
As they entered the venue, the eyes of the crowd seemed to gravitate toward them. Sadie felt a strange mix of vulnerability and power as she stood beside Micah. The black gown she wore, the elegant lace ribbon at her neck, and the sparkling diamonds around her neck made her feel like a queen, yet at the same time, like a pawn in a much bigger game.
She stole a glance at Micah, who seemed unfazed by the attention. His stoic expression never wavered as he surveyed the room, his presence commanding.
For a moment, Sadie felt like she was standing in the shadows of a larger-than-life figure. What was his real intention? What did he want from her?
Before she could dwell on it further, a group of people approached them, greeting Micah with familiarity and admiration. Sadie stood silently by his side, her back straight, her posture impeccable. She noticed the subtle glances thrown her way—curiosity, intrigue, and maybe even a bit of envy. They all knew who she was now, just as Micah had intended.
As they moved deeper into the event, Sadie couldn’t help but feel a nagging sense of uncertainty. The eyes of the room weren’t the only ones watching her. There was Micah, silently observing her every move. His presence, though quiet, was overpowering.
What would happen when the evening ended? Would things between them return to the fragile truce they had built? Or was this just another part of his game?
Sadie tried to push those thoughts aside and focus on the present moment. But the unease continued to linger, hanging in the air like an invisible weight. The night had just begun, and already, she could feel the tangled web of emotions and expectations closing in around her.
