Chapter_49
Nathan watched the man with amusement, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. He was clearly enjoying the scene more than he let on. The man, now visibly frustrated, dropped the broken stick and looked at Nathan with a mix of disbelief and irritation.
“What is this?!” the man exclaimed, his voice tight with suppressed anger. “This is ridiculous! Do you think I have time for this? This is a waste of—”
But Nathan didn’t seem fazed. “You asked me to check, didn’t you?” he replied, his voice almost playful, though the look in his eyes was sharp. “I told you Coco was sick and that we’d be checking her poop every day.”
The man took a deep breath, trying to compose himself, but it was clear his patience was wearing thin. “Fine. But if you don’t find the chip soon, you’re going to regret this, kid.”
Nathan didn’t flinch at the threat. Instead, he crouched down again and resumed poking at the pile, his expression focused. “It’ll come out, don’t worry. But I’m not gonna stop checking until it’s all cleared up.”
Meanwhile, at the school, Miss Bell had returned with Nathan’s younger brother, Mia, in tow. The atmosphere was tense as she approached Noah, who had been talking to Mr. Brooks and Andrew.
“Mr. Brooks, I found Nathan,” she said, her voice steady despite the chaos unfolding. “But he’s… he’s with someone at the playground right now.”
Andrew nodded, still processing the information. “Get Nathan here. We need him to help us understand what happened with that chip. It’s our only lead.”
Noah, overhearing the conversation, looked up with renewed concern. “I told you already, it’s with Coco, and I think the chip will be out soon. I’m sure of it,” he said, trying to ease the tension in the room.
Mr. Brooks gave him an encouraging smile. “Good, Noah. Just hang tight. We’ll sort this out.”
A few minutes later, Nathan and Mia walked into the room, both looking slightly disheveled but with no sign of worry. Nathan was carrying a small, colorful box, and Mia’s eyes were wide with curiosity as she surveyed the adults in the room.
“Did you find it?” Andrew asked, his tone cautious but hopeful.
Nathan nodded, holding up the box with a grin. “I did. But it’s not quite what you were expecting.”
The man in black, who had followed Nathan into the room, was still trying to hide his frustration. “It better be worth all this trouble,” he muttered under his breath, glancing at Nathan as if trying to gauge his sincerity.
Nathan grinned mischievously, the familiar twinkle in his eyes. “Well, you asked for the chip, and this is what I got. I’ll let you see for yourself.”
With a flourish, Nathan opened the box, revealing a small, golden object wrapped in layers of tissue. The man’s face twisted in surprise and then disbelief as he reached for the object and inspected it closely.
“Are you kidding me?” he spat, his face reddening. “This is… this is what I’ve been chasing after?”
Nathan shrugged. “Hey, it’s not my fault you didn’t get the timing right. But hey, you got it back, didn’t you?”
The man glared at him, the anger still simmering beneath his surface. “You’re lucky I’m not reporting you for this,” he muttered.
“Go ahead,” Nathan shot back with a grin. “But I think your boss is going to be pretty mad if you fail to bring this back in one piece. You might want to check the poop next time a little sooner.”
The man, clearly done with the exchange, turned on his heel and left the room, muttering under his breath.
Noah, Mia, and their parents all watched as the scene unfolded. Andrew, still standing by, couldn’t help but chuckle at the situation. “Well, that was… unexpected.”
Mr. Brooks, too, let out a small laugh, the tension in the room finally breaking. “That kid’s got some guts, I’ll give him that.”
Nathan handed the golden chip back to Andrew. “I told you it was all good. Coco’s fine now, and we didn’t miss anything important. But don’t come to me next time asking for help with this sort of thing. It’s gross.”
Andrew accepted the chip, his earlier frustration giving way to a small sense of relief. “Thanks, Nathan. You really saved the day.”
Mia smiled at him, clearly proud of her brother, while Noah just looked on with a bemused expression. “That was some adventure, huh?” he said, half to himself.
As the situation wound down, the tension in the room dissipated, leaving behind only the sense of an unexpected victory. The chip was back where it belonged, but the challenges were far from over. As for Nathan and his siblings, they seemed to take it all in stride, as if it was just another day in their wild and unpredictable lives.
