Chapter_84
Sadie froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn’t want to hear anything from Ronan, especially not something so dramatic. But his words lingered in the air, and she couldn’t shake the sudden weight of what he had said. “If you end up with Micah, you’ll regret it!”
Turning back, Sadie tried to steady her breath. She glanced at Ronan, his face filled with a mix of pain and frustration, but she didn’t have time for this—certainly not now. She had to leave, but Leah’s voice grew louder, closer. The last thing she needed was for the White family to find her here.
Ronan seemed to sense the shift in her, and before she could respond, he stepped forward quickly, blocking her path. “Sadie, listen to me—”
“No, Ronan,” she interrupted sharply. “I’m done listening.” She took a step back, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the swirling emotions inside her. “I have nothing more to say to you.”
But before she could turn around and make her way out of the restroom, Leah’s voice rang out again. “Ronan! Where are you? Let me in!”
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat as the sound of footsteps neared. She didn’t want to be caught in this compromising position, especially with the chaos about to unfold. She needed to escape before the tension between Ronan and Leah spilled over.
Ronan hesitated, his eyes flicking between Sadie and the door. He didn’t move, as though he wanted to say something else, but Leah’s voice had become more insistent. Sadie, her patience wearing thin, made her decision.
“I’m leaving, Ronan. And so should you.” Her words were firm, her resolve set. “You should be with your wife, where you belong.”
Ronan’s face flickered with emotion—regret, perhaps—but he didn’t say anything more. The silence between them grew heavy, and in the quiet, Sadie turned on her heel and pushed open the restroom door.
As soon as she stepped into the corridor, she saw Leah coming toward her, eyes searching for her husband. Leah’s gaze immediately locked onto Sadie, narrowing with suspicion. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice cool but sharp.
Sadie didn’t answer directly. She straightened her posture and gave Leah a polite smile, masking the tension she felt. “I was just leaving. It’s not a good time for me to stay,” she said smoothly, hoping the encounter wouldn’t escalate.
Leah eyed her with lingering distrust, but Sadie didn’t give her the chance to question further. “I’ll let you find your husband,” she said, stepping aside.
Leah didn’t acknowledge Sadie’s words; she just walked past her briskly, heading into the restroom without another glance. Sadie felt the air relax around her, but only for a moment. Her thoughts were still spinning, and the encounter with Ronan, as much as she had tried to push it aside, left a knot in her stomach.
She walked quickly back toward the banquet hall, where Micah waited. She needed to focus on the evening ahead, but the words Ronan had spoken echoed in her mind.
“If you end up with Micah, you’ll regret it…” What did he mean by that? And why did it feel like there was some truth to his warning, something she wasn’t yet able to see?
As she re-entered the main hall, Sadie forced herself to push those thoughts down, hoping to lose herself in the remaining time of the evening. But one thing was certain: the stakes in her life were rising, and no matter how hard she tried to ignore it, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Ronan’s cryptic words might be the least of her worries.
