Chapter_56
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat at the sight of the man in black. She immediately recognized him as the same person who had been after the microchip—the one who had been lurking around her family’s home earlier. The chilling smile he gave before the car door slammed shut sent a shiver down her spine.
Brenda, broom still in hand, stared at the screen in disbelief. “So, it was really him…” she murmured. “But what does he mean by ‘If you find it, you win’?”
Sadie’s mind raced, piecing everything together. The chip—the stolen technology from VIC Group—had somehow made its way into their lives, and it was clear that whoever this man was, he wasn’t going to give up easily.
Noah, who had been sitting quietly on the couch, suddenly stood up, his face serious. “They think the chip was thrown into the sea, but it’s still out there somewhere. They won’t stop until they find it. And now that they know we were involved, it’s only a matter of time before they come after us again.”
Sadie swallowed hard, her thoughts torn. The man in black’s words echoed in her mind. If you find it, you win. What did he mean by that? Was he planning to come back for the chip once he realized it hadn’t been found in the sea? And if so, would her family be safe? Could they avoid getting caught up in whatever this dangerous game was?
“Mom, are we in danger?” Mia’s voice cracked as she clung to Sadie’s side, her eyes wide with fear.
Sadie crouched down, brushing a loose strand of hair from Mia’s face. She forced a smile, trying to reassure her. “Don’t worry, sweetie. We’ll be okay. We just have to stay smart and stay safe.”
But in truth, Sadie wasn’t sure if that was entirely true.
Brenda, sensing Sadie’s concern, gave a small, determined nod. “We need a plan. We can’t just sit around and wait for trouble to find us.”
“Right,” Noah added. “We need to be prepared for whatever comes next. We can’t let them catch us off guard again.”
Sadie stood up, her mind made up. “I’ll report the break-in to the police. They need to know about the intruder, even if I don’t tell them everything. We can’t afford to keep hiding everything. If the VIC Group gets involved again, they’ll only make things worse for us. Maybe the police can help.”
Brenda was already nodding in agreement. “I’ll help, too. Let’s figure this out before they come back.”
Sadie pulled out her phone again, this time dialing the police, and as the phone rang, she glanced at the TV once more. The news anchor was still talking about the shooting incident, but Sadie couldn’t focus on the details anymore.
Her thoughts were consumed with the man in black’s warning and the danger it posed to her family. She could only hope that the police would take her seriously, and that by coming forward, they wouldn’t be dragged deeper into this web of lies, threats, and high-tech heists. The last thing she wanted was for her family to be caught in the crossfire of a dangerous game they had no part in.
