Chapter_85
Sadie stood still, her gaze flicking between the increasingly tense scene and the people around her. She could feel the weight of the situation pressing down, the air charged with unresolved anger and awkward apologies. Leah, seething with fury, stood behind her mother, while Ronan seemed more irritated than ever. But it was Micah who commanded everyone’s attention. His presence alone caused a ripple of discomfort, and even Leah, usually so bold, cowered in his presence.
Dahlia, ever poised, led Sadie to stand beside Micah, her quiet grace contrasting sharply with the chaos unfolding. Sadie felt the discomfort in the air but kept her composure, standing firm next to him, watching the exchange unfold with a mix of disbelief and curiosity.
Leah, trembling with frustration, glared at Dahlia. “You should know your place, serving someone like Mr. Clemens… Don’t think you can get away with this.”
Micah’s cold eyes met Leah’s gaze, his voice measured but laced with authority. “If you think I’m going to tolerate this nonsense, you’re mistaken.”
Leah’s breath caught, her pride battling with fear as she tried to find her words. But Micah was already looking past her, clearly uninterested in anything she had to say. He shifted his attention back to Ronan, who had been unusually quiet, his expression conflicted.
Ronan, now visibly uncomfortable, rubbed his temples, clearly wishing he could dissolve into the floor. He had never anticipated a confrontation like this—especially not in front of Sadie. “I apologize again for the disturbance,” he muttered, his gaze briefly flicking toward Sadie before he looked away.
Sadie met his gaze, holding her ground. Her emotions were still a whirlwind after the brief interaction with him in the restroom, but she refused to show any weakness. She had nothing left to say to him.
Kathleen, sensing her daughter’s growing distress, tried to salvage what little dignity they had left. “We didn’t mean to cause trouble. Truly, it’s just… this misunderstanding,” she stammered, bowing once more, but the thin veneer of politeness couldn’t hide the underlying animosity.
Sadie’s eyes narrowed as she watched the performance unfold. Kathleen was skilled, no doubt, but Sadie wasn’t sure if she admired the woman’s ability to adapt or found it distasteful. Either way, she didn’t want to be dragged into their drama any longer.
“Mr. Clemens,” Kathleen began, her voice smoother now, but Sadie saw through the act. “I truly hope this can be put behind us. We’re all here for a good cause, after all.”
“Of course,” Micah replied, his voice as cold as ever, his eyes hardening as they flicked over the White family. “But let this be a lesson. There are certain boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed.”
Leah, whose emotions had been simmering, couldn’t hold back any longer. “You’re all acting as if you’re so superior!” she spat, her face flushed with frustration. “Do you think you can just walk all over us because of your connections?”
Without missing a beat, Micah’s gaze turned ice-cold. “Your delusions are becoming tiresome, Leah.”
Sadie could feel the tension between them thickening, the entire situation escalating in a way that was beginning to feel suffocating. She stepped forward slightly, her voice calm but firm. “That’s enough,” she said, addressing both Leah and Micah. “This isn’t the time or place for this.”
Micah looked at her, surprised by her interjection, but he said nothing. Leah, on the other hand, looked like she was about to explode, but the weight of Sadie’s words finally seemed to silence her.
Dahlia gave a small, respectful nod to Sadie, silently acknowledging her control over the situation. “Perhaps it’s best if we all return to our places,” she suggested, her voice a soft but effective reminder that there were other matters to focus on.
The tension didn’t disappear entirely, but at least the immediate conflict had been diffused. Sadie turned away from the group, her hand lightly brushing Micah’s arm as she walked past him. She could feel his gaze on her, but she didn’t look back. Not yet. Not when there were still so many unresolved questions hanging in the air.
