Chapter_66
Sadie’s heart sank as Kathleen’s words hit her like a cold gust of wind. The old Roth family estate—their estate—now belonged to her aunt and uncle. It was a bitter realization that the home she had once known, filled with memories of her childhood and the legacy of her family, had been taken over by the very people she’d distanced herself from.
“Of course, I didn’t know,” Sadie replied through gritted teeth, trying to keep her voice steady. “I don’t keep track of the White family’s dealings.”
Kathleen’s laugh echoed over the line, sharp and unrelenting. “Well, now you know. It’s a beautiful home, Sadie, and we’ve made it even more grand with all the renovations. Your children will love it—just like they’ll love being around Billy. We’ve been so good to you. A little visit from you and the kids will be the perfect way to show appreciation.”
Sadie couldn’t shake the unease swirling inside her. This was more than just a casual dinner. Kathleen was trying to reinsert herself into Sadie’s life in a way that felt calculated, as if she was testing how much control she could regain over Sadie and her family.
“I’ll be there,” Sadie said flatly, unwilling to let her aunt see any more vulnerability. “But I need to make sure the children are prepared. I’ll call you with the exact time later.”
“Perfect,” Kathleen replied with a tone that suggested victory. “I’ll see you soon.”
As the call ended, Sadie sat still for a moment, her mind racing. The fact that the estate had been sold to the White family wasn’t the only shock. The mention of journalists and her children—the very things she’d worked so hard to protect—made her feel cornered. Kathleen’s sly remark about the Roth Group’s ties to the FE Group only added more layers to the brewing storm.
What did her aunt want with her now? And why the sudden push to bring her back into their world? Sadie couldn’t help but wonder if they had already plotted how to leverage her name and the Roth legacy for their own benefit. The truth was, she didn’t trust them—not after the way they’d disappeared during the Roth family’s fall from grace, and not after they had kept their distance during the darkest moments of her life.
But Sadie knew that refusing them wasn’t an option. If Kathleen exposed her children, the consequences would be catastrophic—not just for Sadie, but for the kids as well. They were just children, but the world they were born into wouldn’t let them be innocent for long.
With a deep breath, Sadie pushed her frustration aside and turned her attention back to the present. She couldn’t afford to let her emotions cloud her judgment. She needed a plan—her plan—to protect her children and, if possible, keep her aunt and uncle at arm’s length.
But there was one thing that she knew for sure now: she couldn’t trust anyone, not even family.
