Chapter_39
Brenda could sense the weight in Sadie’s voice, but she didn’t push further. Instead, she quietly placed a hand on Sadie’s shoulder. “I know it’s hard,” she said softly. “But you’re doing your best, and that’s all anyone can ask for. You’ve created a good life for your children, and that’s what matters most now.”
Sadie smiled faintly, appreciating Brenda’s words. She had always been a supportive presence in her life, someone who understood her without needing to ask too many questions. Despite the turmoil she’d endured, Sadie felt fortunate to have such a steady friend by her side.
After a moment, Sadie stood up and walked to her closet to pull on her pajamas. “I’ll be fine,” she said quietly, almost to herself. “I’ve been through worse.”
Brenda watched her for a beat, then nodded. “Of course. You’ve always been strong, Miss Sadie. You’ve got this.”
Sadie nodded back, though a small part of her still ached for what could have been. The memories of Ronan and the life they could have had together still lingered in her heart. But now, she had her children to focus on, and their future was what mattered.
She climbed into bed, pulling the covers up around her as she glanced at the family photo on her nightstand. A picture of them—her, Noah, Nathan, Mia, and even Brenda—together on a picnic last summer. Despite the challenges, she could see how far they had come, and that gave her strength.
Her mind drifted back to Ronan, but she pushed those thoughts away. What was the point in dwelling on the past? It was time to move forward.
She closed her eyes, drifting off to sleep, her thoughts softening into a quiet resolve. She had done everything she could for her children, and she would continue to do so. No matter what happened with Ronan or anyone else, she would always protect her family.
Life was unpredictable, but for the first time in a long time, Sadie felt at peace with her place in it. She had her children, her strength, and her own resilience. Everything else would fall into place in time.
Meanwhile, Ronan sat in his study, unable to shake the thoughts of Sadie from his mind. The image of her walking away from him earlier, that cold, resolute expression, haunted him. He knew that he had hurt her deeply—he had always known, but it had never felt more real than it did now, seeing her as a mother, independent and strong.
Vincent entered the room with a file in his hand, breaking Ronan’s trance. “Mr. Potter, I’ve found the information you requested,” Vincent said, his voice cautious.
Ronan didn’t respond immediately. He simply stared at the papers in Vincent’s hand. Part of him didn’t want to know. He didn’t want to delve into Sadie’s life any further, but another part of him couldn’t resist.
With a sigh, he reached for the file. “Let’s see it.”
Vincent opened the file and began to summarize the contents. “The father of the children… is a businessman, an entrepreneur who worked with Sadie a few years ago. His name is Michael Harris. He’s known for his successful ventures in the agricultural sector. He’s not a stranger to wealth, but he’s kept a low profile.”
Ronan’s expression darkened. He had suspected that Sadie’s life after leaving Newark hadn’t been as simple as it seemed. A businessman. It wasn’t what he had expected, but it made sense.
Vincent paused before continuing, clearly hesitant. “From what I gather, Michael is someone who values privacy and has kept his distance from any public attention, unlike some of the other high-profile figures in the city.”
Ronan’s jaw clenched. “I see. Thank you, Vincent.”
As Vincent left the room, Ronan sat back in his chair, lost in thought. Sadie had moved on—had built a life without him. And now, there was someone else in her life, someone who was providing for her and her children.
A part of him felt betrayed, but another part understood. He had made his choices long ago, and now he had to live with the consequences.
The weight of his thoughts pressed heavily on him. Could he truly let go of the past? Would he ever be able to reconcile with Sadie? Or was it already too late?
