Chapter_34
The room fell silent for a moment as everyone processed Billy’s outburst. Leah’s face twisted in disbelief, while Sadie couldn’t help but feel a mix of surprise and frustration. She had never expected Billy to openly contradict his mother, and it was clear from his panicked expression that his emotions were running high.
The principal looked taken aback, trying to regain control of the situation. “Mr. Potter’s son—”
“Stop!” Leah snapped, her voice sharp and commanding. She looked down at Billy with a mix of anger and exasperation. “What are you doing? You’re making things worse!”
Billy, however, ignored his mother’s furious tone and turned his gaze toward Mia, his face softening with guilt. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’m sorry,” he muttered, his voice barely audible.
Mia, still in her mother’s arms, wiped at her tears but didn’t say anything. She was clearly shaken by the situation, torn between the words she had heard and the familiar faces of her classmates. Sadie gently stroked her hair, whispering words of reassurance. “It’s okay, sweetheart. We’ll get through this.”
Leah’s face flushed red with rage, and she turned on Billy once again. “You fool, do you have any idea what you’re doing? You’re ruining everything!”
But Billy remained resolute, his small shoulders squared as he faced her. “I don’t want Mia to leave,” he repeated firmly, his eyes locked with the principal’s, pleading for understanding.
Sadie observed the exchange quietly, a growing sense of triumph bubbling up inside her. Leah’s perfect little world was unraveling right before her eyes. Her son, once her unquestioning ally, had begun to show cracks in his armor.
The principal, visibly rattled by the sudden shift in dynamics, cleared her throat. “Mrs. Potter, please,” she said, her voice now much softer than before. “This is… not how we intended things to go. We are clearly at an impasse.”
Sadie took a step forward, meeting the principal’s gaze with unwavering confidence. “If you want to keep your precious VIP status intact, you need to start treating all the children equally, including mine. No more exceptions. No more double standards.”
The principal opened her mouth to argue but was interrupted by the teacher, who cautiously spoke up. “I… I think we can resolve this without involving anyone else. Perhaps a meeting with Mr. Potter himself is the next step. We can address the compensation issue and make sure everything is handled fairly.”
Leah’s eyes narrowed in irritation, but she didn’t speak, allowing the teacher to continue.
Sadie nodded, acknowledging the teacher’s attempt at mediation. “Fine. Let’s meet with Mr. Potter. But make no mistake, Leah. I won’t let you push me or my children around any longer.”
Leah’s smug expression returned, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. “I’m not the one being pushed around here, Sadie,” she said, though her voice lacked the same conviction it once had. “We’ll see how things play out. After all, we both know whose side the school will be on.”
Sadie glanced at her sons, then back at Leah. “You can think that all you want. But you’re forgetting one important thing: I’m not afraid of you anymore.”
Leah was momentarily silent, her face tightening with frustration. But she didn’t have a comeback. For the first time, Sadie could see the cracks in her armor, too.
The principal, sensing the tension in the room, quickly stepped in. “Let’s take a break and reconvene in an hour. I’ll contact Mr. Potter and arrange a time for him to come here. Hopefully, we can come to a resolution that works for everyone.”
Sadie didn’t wait for anyone’s approval before she turned and walked out, her children by her side. She knew this wasn’t over yet, but she had made her stand. And for the first time in a long while, she felt like she had the upper hand.
