Chapter_15
Sadie froze for a moment, her stomach twisting as she locked eyes with Micah. The chaos in the cafeteria seemed to slow down, like everything else around them had faded into the background. Micah stood there, his gaze as piercing and unreadable as ever, but for a brief moment, she saw a flicker of something—perhaps amusement—as he watched Samuel scramble to wipe pasta off his face.
“Mr. Clemens,” Sadie stammered, her voice barely above a whisper, realizing she was still holding her tray with her hand shaking slightly. She quickly set it down on the nearest table, avoiding his intense stare.
Micah didn’t say a word at first. He simply gave a small, almost imperceptible smirk, as though he found the situation amusing. Then, with a calm, collected air, he turned his attention back to Samuel, who was still wiping at his face with a napkin, looking like he was ready to explode.
“Careful there,” Micah said in his low, composed voice, though it wasn’t directed at Sadie. His eyes flicked over her, but it was more a passing glance than anything personal. “Perhaps next time, you might want to stand a bit farther away from your plate.”
Samuel, now entirely red-faced, shot Micah an incredulous look. “I—uh, I wasn’t trying to—”
“Save it,” Micah interrupted, not even bothering to look at him fully. Instead, he stepped aside and nodded toward Sadie, motioning for her to pass by. “I’ll make sure the floor’s cleaned up properly.”
Sadie, still a little stunned by the bizarre turn of events, took the opportunity to slip away from the scene. She gave a quick, embarrassed glance toward her colleagues, who were watching her like she was in the middle of some soap opera. They were all whispering, eyes wide, murmurs of excitement floating through the air.
She didn’t want to deal with any more attention, so she turned to leave but was once again blocked—this time by Samuel, who now seemed to be in damage control mode. “Sadie, hey, look, that was a misunderstanding, alright? You didn’t mean it. It’s fine,” he said quickly, trying to sound casual but clearly struggling to hide his embarrassment.
Sadie couldn’t help but roll her eyes at his persistence. She was getting sick of the drama and just wanted a quiet lunch, but Samuel wasn’t about to make it easy for her. “Just… just stop following me,” she said, her voice colder than she intended. “I’m not interested in hearing your excuses.”
Samuel blinked, clearly taken aback by her bluntness, but he didn’t press further. As Sadie moved past him again, she glanced over her shoulder to see Micah still standing by the doorway, watching the scene unfold with a detached but knowing gaze.
That brief moment of connection with Micah, even though it was fleeting, lingered in Sadie’s mind as she headed for the nearest exit. Why had he stepped in like that? Was he trying to prevent the situation from escalating, or was it just a coincidence? She couldn’t shake the strange feeling that Micah had been more involved in the moment than he let on.
As she left the cafeteria, her thoughts were tangled, and her mind couldn’t quite wrap around what had just happened. Micah was a mystery, but one thing was for sure—he was impossible to ignore.
