The tension between Sarah and Wanda had reached a boiling point, but neither could have predicted what Carlisle was about to do. As Sarah watched him walk away, her mind was spinning. His casual rejection had caught her off guard, and the playful tone with which he addressed Wanda had stung. “Dear Wanda” echoed in her mind like a soft slap to her ego.
Sienna, sensing Sarah’s discomfort, glanced at Wanda and then at Carlisle. “Did he really just call her ‘dear’?” she muttered under her breath, struggling to hold back her surprise. The atmosphere around them seemed to shift. Even the boys, who had been cheering and playing basketball just moments ago, noticed the subtle change.
Wanda, however, was too flustered to say anything immediately. Her face had turned a soft shade of pink, her thoughts scattered. She couldn’t help but wonder if Carlisle’s new attitude was because of her—or perhaps something else entirely. For weeks, she’d seen him as a low-achieving student, someone who barely made it past the middle ranks in class. But now, as he walked away from Sarah with a confident step, something was different.
“Are you going to be okay?” Sienna asked, her tone laced with mock sympathy.
Wanda barely acknowledged her, lost in her own thoughts. All she could think about was how Carlisle had changed, how different he was now. In the past, he was always so eager to please Sarah, but now, it was as if he was too busy with his newfound focus to care about her or anyone else.
Meanwhile, Sarah tried to shake off the sting of Carlisle’s rejection. She had been so sure that playing badminton with him would be a surefire way to rekindle their connection. She watched as he laughed with Sean, as if nothing had changed. But deep down, Sarah felt a sharp pang of jealousy. It was a feeling she wasn’t used to. Usually, she was the one who controlled the situation, the one who held all the cards. But now, it was as if Carlisle had slipped from her grasp.
Wanda, on the other hand, stood silently, her heart racing as she considered the implications of Carlisle’s words. Did he actually care about her? Was he starting to see her as more than just a classmate? She had always been unsure of her own feelings, but now, with the way he treated her so gently, she couldn’t deny the possibility of something more.
As the group moved back to their respective activities, the tension between them lingered. Sarah felt the need to prove herself once again, while Wanda was left in quiet contemplation. And Carlisle, ever the enigma, simply continued to move forward, a man focused on his future—and perhaps, someone else’s heart.
