Carlisle’s eyes softened as he listened to Ms. Turner’s voice on the other end of the line. He appreciated how quickly she acted to clear up the situation for Wanda. The weight of the rumor had been heavy on her, and now, with the truth coming to light, things were starting to settle.
“She’s with me right now, Ms. Turner,” Carlisle said, glancing over at Wanda. She had already stopped crying, but the hurt in her eyes remained. “I’ll pass on your message. Thank you for standing up for her.”
“Of course,” Lucy replied warmly. “Tell Wanda not to worry. People will see the truth. And as for you, Carlisle, I have no doubt you’ll do well in e-commerce. Your future is bright. As for Wanda, she’s got great potential, too. Her character and work ethic are beyond reproach.”
Carlisle smiled at her words, feeling more reassured. “Thanks, Ms. Turner. We’ll be fine. I’ll make sure Wanda’s okay.”
He hung up and turned to Wanda, who was still gripping his phone, her mind clearly elsewhere. He could see the relief in her posture, but there was still a lingering sadness.
“Hey, you’re okay now,” Carlisle said gently, leaning forward to offer her a comforting smile. “The truth’s out. Keith and Taylor won’t be able to get away with this.”
Wanda nodded, though her voice was still quiet. “I know. But it still hurts. How could they spread such a horrible lie about me?”
Carlisle understood her pain, but he also knew that people who truly cared about her wouldn’t believe the rumors. “Don’t worry. There are a lot of people who know who you really are. You’ll see.”
As if on cue, the group chat began to buzz with messages of support. Several classmates had shared their thoughts, denouncing the slanderous accusations and offering words of encouragement. Sarah and Sienna had already spoken out, and others followed suit, reaffirming Wanda’s character.
Wanda read through the messages slowly, her expression softening as she absorbed the warmth from her friends. She had been doubting herself for a moment, but now, surrounded by support, she felt her strength return.
“Thank you, Carlisle,” she whispered, her voice sincere. “I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
Carlisle smiled warmly. “You don’t need to thank me, Wanda. I’m your friend. Always.”
At that moment, their bond seemed even stronger, forged in the midst of adversity. Carlisle was certain that this situation would pass, and in time, it would only serve to bring them closer together.
“Let’s move forward, yeah?” Carlisle suggested. “The whole class now knows the truth. Don’t let it hold you back.”
Wanda gave him a small, grateful smile, her confidence beginning to return. “Yeah. I’m not going to let this ruin everything.”
Carlisle felt a sense of pride for his friend. She had been through so much, and yet here she was, standing tall.
With a nod, he leaned back in his seat and allowed the class to get back to normal. The day’s chaos was over, but the underlying sense of camaraderie between him and Wanda would carry them through whatever came next.
