Carlisle smiled, feeling a mix of amusement and gratitude. It was a small, simple gesture, but it made the whole situation feel lighter. “Thanks,” he said, reaching for the fatty meat. He noticed the way Wanda carefully picked through her food and couldn’t help but feel a warmth in his chest. Even something as mundane as sharing a meal felt meaningful when she was involved.
Wanda’s smile was soft, and her eyes twinkled with a hint of mischief. “Don’t thank me just yet. You still owe me for your earlier bad table manners!” She giggled, leaning back in her seat, feeling a bit more at ease.
Meanwhile, Sarah couldn’t tear her gaze away from the pair, her mind swirling with questions. Seeing Carlisle interact so easily with Wanda only deepened her confusion. She had thought that their relationship was something more, but now, it seemed… different.
Kelvin, noticing Sarah’s distracted expression, leaned closer. “You’re not focused today. What’s on your mind?”
She blinked, startled out of her thoughts. “Nothing,” she replied quickly, forcing a smile. “Just thinking about… things.”
“Anything I can help with?” Kelvin’s tone was gentle but tinged with concern.
Sarah shook her head, brushing off his inquiry. “It’s nothing. Let’s just eat.”
Across the cafeteria, Wanda was still happily watching Carlisle, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of amusement and something deeper—something she hadn’t quite figured out yet. The easy camaraderie between them felt natural, even though she was still trying to reconcile all the new emotions bubbling up inside her.
She reached for the last of the vegetables on her plate, offering it to Carlisle with a grin. “Here, this one’s for you too. You seem to like everything on my plate.”
Carlisle laughed softly, accepting the food. “What can I say? You have great taste.”
The playful banter between them continued, and for a few moments, it was as if the world outside the cafeteria didn’t exist. The bustling students, the distant voices of lectures beginning to echo in the hallways—they all faded into the background.
But despite the light-hearted exchange, a certain tension lingered in the air, especially with Sarah sitting across from them, watching every interaction with a careful, calculating gaze.
