“Damn! Is that a Motorola Razr V3?” one of the roommates exclaimed as they noticed Carlisle’s phone, their eyes widening in disbelief.
That phone was worth more than 4000 dollars.
“How the hell does he have a Motorola Razr V3?” they whispered to each other.
Kelvin, noticing the attention Carlisle’s phone was getting, shrugged nonchalantly. “It’s just a V3! I’ve got one too!” He pulled out his own, waving it to show off.
“Wow, I’ve only got a PHS phone,” one of the roommates muttered, clearly a little embarrassed.
“At least you’ve got that! My dad got me a pager for my birthday!” another said, trying to make light of the situation.
“I guess we can’t all be as lucky as Carlisle,” one of the roommates added, glancing at Carlisle with a mix of envy and awe.
Carlisle felt a little uncomfortable with the attention, but he wasn’t about to let them get under his skin. The truth was, his family background was nothing like what they probably assumed. But he wasn’t about to share personal details with people he’d just met.
“Carlisle,” Kelvin said, his voice turning casual but still carrying an edge, “I’ll give you 200 bucks for that favor—just spread the message about Wanda in the group chat. You know the one.” He flashed the money in front of Carlisle.
Carlisle’s eyes hardened, and he shot Kelvin a glare. “Get lost. I don’t need your money.”
Kelvin’s face twisted in annoyance, but he tried to mask it with a forced smile. “Fine, keep your high horse. But don’t think I’ll forget this.”
Carlisle could feel the tension in the room, and he knew that Kelvin wasn’t someone to forget slights easily. If the opportunity came, he would get back at Carlisle. But Carlisle wasn’t worried. No amount of money or petty threats would make him betray Wanda.
A beep interrupted his thoughts. He glanced at his phone and saw a new message from Sweet_like_candy.
“I told you, I’m not Wanda!” the message read.
Carlisle quickly typed back, “I don’t believe you. Call me.”
Sweet_like_candy replied almost instantly, “I don’t even know your number.”
Carlisle was growing impatient, but he typed his number anyway. “1314… this is it. Call me.”
A few seconds passed before the message came: “I’m not going to call you!”
Carlisle’s lips curled into a tight smile. “Then remove me from your friend list. We’ve got nothing to talk about.”
Sweet_like_candy’s reply was quick: “Fine! I’ll call you!”
The phone rang almost immediately.
Carlisle picked up, expecting to hear Wanda’s voice—but instead, a deep, unfamiliar voice greeted him. “Hello, Bygones_b_bygones!”
It wasn’t Wanda. His stomach dropped.
Without a word, Carlisle ended the call. Anger and frustration bubbled up inside him as he immediately removed the contact from his friend list.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ dorm room, Queenie handed the phone back to Wanda with a teasing smile. “Is he your boyfriend?”
Wanda’s cheeks flushed bright red, and she shook her head shyly. “No, he’s not.”
Queenie raised an eyebrow. “Don’t lie! Your cheeks are all red!”
But Wanda didn’t respond. The image of Carlisle and Christine hugging under the rain flashed in her mind, and her smile faltered. Her eyes dimmed, and a heavy weight settled in her chest.
“What’s wrong? Does he not like you?” Queenie asked, sensing the shift in Wanda’s mood.
Wanda hugged her knees to her chest, leaning against the wall. Her voice was barely a whisper. “Probably not.”
She had worked so hard to score 1350 on her SATs for him, believing that, finally, after he gave up on Sarah, she would have a chance. But now, seeing him with Christine, all of her hopes had crumbled.
Queenie sat beside her, placing a hand on hers in a comforting gesture. “Silly girl. Men are all the same! You’re amazing. Don’t waste your time on someone like him. I’ll introduce you to some rich, handsome young men tomorrow. They’ll treat you right.”
Wanda tried to smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “There’s no need for that. I’m not ready to be in a relationship yet.”
She picked up her phone, her mind racing. She was about to send another message to Sweet_like_candy under the guise of reaching out to Carlisle.
But then her eyes widened in shock. “Did he really remove me?” she whispered to herself, staring at the screen. Bygones_b_bygones was gone from her friend list.
Queenie couldn’t help but laugh. “Just give up on him. He’s not worth it.”
Wanda, trying to reassure herself, muttered, “He probably removed me after hearing your voice.”
Queenie looked at her, bewildered. “What’s that supposed to mean? Is my voice not melodious?”
Wanda gave a soft, sad smile. “I didn’t mean it like that… just forget it.”
