“Tell me his name! I’ll rip him to shreds tomorrow!” Queenie growled, her eyes burning with fury as she clenched her fists.
Wanda flinched at the intensity of Queenie’s anger. “Okay, okay! You should go back to your dorm now. I’m going to bed soon!” She forced a smile, trying to diffuse the situation.
Queenie stood up, her presence commanding the attention of the room. “Wanda is my childhood friend, and I’m the granddaughter of the vice president of Riverland University. Anyone who dares to bully her will regret it!” She said it with such authority that the group of young girls couldn’t help but nod nervously. Even Wanda, usually composed, took a small step back, a bit intimidated by Queenie’s strength.
Perhaps only Queenie’s strong personality could keep someone like Zachary in check, Wanda thought.
The next day, Carlisle walked into class, his mind occupied with the future ahead of him. He had chosen the School of Business as the foundation for his entrepreneurial dreams, focusing on e-commerce, which was still a relatively new field. The e-commerce major had two classes, each consisting of only about 35 students, making it a close-knit group.
As soon as he entered the room, his eyes immediately locked with two familiar pairs—Christine and Wanda. To his surprise, they had chosen the e-commerce major as well.
“Carlisle…” Christine’s voice called out gently, her smile warm but somewhat guarded. She hadn’t expected him to be in the same major, let alone the same class. An empty seat beside her was the perfect opportunity for him to sit near her.
Wanda, sitting a little further away, immediately lowered her gaze. Her chest tightened with a mix of emotions.
“Excuse me, can I sit beside you?” Carlisle’s voice broke through the silence, directed toward Wanda.
Wanda’s heart skipped a beat. She lifted her gaze to look at him briefly before quickly turning her head away, trying to hide the turmoil inside her. “No one’s stopping you…”
Carlisle took a seat beside her, the tension between them thick in the air. Christine’s smile faltered for just a second, her heart sinking as she watched the interaction. It’s all in my head, she thought. Carlisle likes Wanda, not me.
Carlisle felt his pulse quicken. It was the first time he had seen Wanda since the summer break, and the sight of her sent waves of nostalgia and confusion through him. Wanda, on the other hand, was just as nervous, her hands trembling slightly. She couldn’t bring herself to look directly at him.
“I haven’t seen you in ages, Wanda!” Carlisle finally broke the silence, his voice slightly uncertain.
Wanda’s voice was barely above a whisper as she replied, “L-Likewise…”
She was dressed simply in a white short-sleeve shirt and a white skirt, but to Carlisle, she looked more beautiful than ever. Yet, there was an unease in the air that neither of them could ignore.
Wanda’s heart pounded as she tried to make sense of the situation. Why isn’t he sitting with Christine? she wondered. After all, they were together, right?
“Aren’t you worried that Christine will be jealous?” Wanda asked, her voice trembling, her eyes welling up with unshed tears.
Carlisle blinked, taken aback by the question. “Why would she be jealous?” he asked, genuinely confused.
Wanda turned her head slowly to look at him. “Aren’t you two dating?”
Carlisle’s eyes widened in surprise, his mind racing. He chuckled, but it was a nervous, bewildered laugh. “Who told you that?”
Wanda’s gaze hardened, her voice growing quieter but sharper. “I saw it with my own two eyes.”
Carlisle’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Saw what?”
“On the day of the entrance exam… I saw you and Christine hugging each other!” Wanda blurted out, her voice thick with emotion.
Carlisle’s heart skipped a beat. He hadn’t expected this. His mind raced to the memory of that day. So she saw me saving Christine from the attackers… he thought.
He tried to explain, his voice softening. “Christine was kidnapped that day. I saved her. She was scared, so she hugged me. Don’t tell me… you’ve been avoiding me all summer because of that?”
Wanda’s expression shifted, frustration clouding her features. “Why did you go looking for her in the first place?” she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.
“I… I found out she was in danger, so I went to look for her!” Carlisle responded quickly, trying to justify his actions.
Wanda’s eyes flickered with a mix of anger and hurt. “What a stupid excuse!” she snapped, her voice cracking slightly. “Do you take me for a child?”
Carlisle’s face tightened, feeling the sting of her words. “Wanda…”
Before he could continue, Wanda’s voice cut him off, “I even saw you and Christine checking into a hotel last night…”
Carlisle’s eyes widened in shock, his breath catching in his throat. “What? No… that’s not what you think…”
But Wanda was already turning away from him, her words sharp with pain. “Just forget it. I don’t need your explanations.”
The tension in the air was palpable as Carlisle sat there, torn between his feelings for Wanda and his desire to clear the misunderstanding. But the damage was done, and he knew that words alone wouldn’t heal the rift between them.
