“You don’t have to worry about that,” Carlisle said confidently, his voice steady. “I have my ways to make sure that Owen listens to us.”
Carlisle had the experience of working as a salesman in his previous life, where his manager drilled into him the importance of a money-making mindset. That mindset had become second nature to him, and now he was determined to apply it to Owen. He was sure that he could keep him under control.
His phone buzzed, pulling him away from his thoughts. It was another MSN messenger notification from Sweet_like_candy.
“Is your girlfriend pretty?”
“How old is she?”
“How long have you been together?”
“Why aren’t you replying to me?”
Carlisle raised an eyebrow as the questions came in quick succession. His lips curved into a smile as he typed his reply. “What do these questions have to do with you?”
Sweet_like_candy: “I’m just curious!”
Bygones_b_bygones: “Curiosity kills the cat. Besides, we don’t know each other well enough. Why should I reveal so much to you?”
Sweet_like_candy: “We’ll get to know each other better soon enough. I’ll chat with you again tomorrow, but you must make sure to answer today’s questions by then!”
After sending the message, Carlisle noticed that Sweet_like_candy’s profile photo changed to a gray image. His smile widened at the playful exchange. He tucked his phone into his pocket, feeling oddly amused.
Sean, ever curious, couldn’t hold back. “Who was that? That wasn’t Sarah, was it?”
Carlisle snorted, the memory of Sarah still fresh in his mind. “How could it be her?”
In his past life, he had tried to be considerate of Sarah’s feelings, especially at first, but after attending her college entrance celebration, things had changed. He couldn’t shake the bitter memory of Sarah’s parents essentially threatening him for money, all because he’d gifted them $100 instead of the usual paltry amount of $10 or $20. The absurdity of it all still made him want to laugh, though the taste in his mouth was anything but sweet.
“There’s a seafood restaurant up ahead. Let’s eat there,” Carlisle suggested, trying to steer the conversation away from Sarah.
Sean, however, was distracted. His eyes darted toward a woman standing at the bus stop. “Oh? Isn’t that Lily Green?” he asked, a hint of surprise in his voice.
Carlisle turned his head, following Sean’s gaze. Sure enough, it was Lily—Wanda’s deskmate from school. She was standing by the bus stop, looking a little out of place in her jeans and white shirt, her backpack clutched in front of her, a pink suitcase resting beside her. Her nervous energy was palpable.
But as Carlisle’s gaze lingered on Lily, his mind was suddenly assaulted by a loud, overwhelming rumble. The sound seemed to come from within his head, followed by an intense image: a motorcycle skidding to a stop beside Lily. The pillion rider grabbed her backpack, yanking it hard as the rider gunned the engine, pulling Lily along for a few meters… until she was tragically dragged under a cement mixer truck.
Carlisle’s heart skipped a beat, the image flashing too vividly to ignore. His vision swam as his head throbbed with pain, as though someone had struck him with a hammer. He stumbled slightly, his hand instinctively reaching out to Sean for support.
“Carlisle?” Sean’s voice cut through his fog of pain, but Carlisle barely registered it. His eyes locked on Lily, who was now looking anxiously around, oblivious to the grim fate that had just flashed through his mind.
What was that? What did he just see? It looked so real, so vivid… like a vision of the future.
Carlisle gritted his teeth, pushing through the dizziness. He had to focus. Was this a result of his reincarnation? In some ways, he’d always had a strange ability to sense things—things that were yet to come—especially when a person’s history was about to change.
Lily had gotten into Riverland University in his past life, largely thanks to Wanda’s guidance. But now, with his reincarnation, things were different. Lily was standing here, not near Riverland University, but near the University of Science and Technology. It was obvious she had been accepted there.
But why? This didn’t make sense. In this timeline, Lily’s path should have been different. With his rebirth, he’d altered her fate.
Carlisle’s thoughts raced, trying to piece it all together. His actions had changed her future, and yet, somehow, he was seeing flashes of the past… and the possible future. It was a power he couldn’t fully control yet. But one thing was clear—whatever had happened to him in this life was altering not just his own fate but the lives of those around him.
The vision—was it a glimpse of the future? Or was it a warning?
A shiver ran down Carlisle’s spine. His gaze remained fixed on Lily, whose future was now tied inextricably to his own actions.
“Carlisle?” Sean repeated, this time with more urgency. “You okay?”
Carlisle forced a tight smile, steadying himself. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
But deep down, he wasn’t sure anymore. The future was shifting, and with every change, new consequences followed.
