Carlisle’s mind raced as Hank quickly arranged for the sale of the Heavenly Sword and Memory Ring. The anxiety of having used cheats weighed heavily on him. They were in uncharted waters, and while the virtual server protected their IP, the consequences of being caught were still very real. The risk they had taken in order to steal such valuable items—worth over $200,000—was immense, and he wasn’t sure what the fallout would be if it was discovered.
Meanwhile, Heath, who had been pacing anxiously, lit another cigarette, his hands trembling slightly. “I’ve never crossed this line before. This is… too much. Do you really think we can get away with it?”
Hank, however, seemed unfazed. He was already on the phone, arranging the sale with Bob York, a notorious figure in their circles. Bob was a player who knew the worth of every rare item in The Legendary Tale and had the cash to back it up. As Hank listened to Bob’s response, his face remained stoic, but Carlisle could see the excitement brewing underneath.
“Alright, come to my place!” Bob’s voice echoed through the phone’s speaker, practically vibrating with anticipation. Hank, who had been careful not to give away their location, simply nodded.
Carlisle and Heath exchanged glances. Heath’s earlier concerns about the developers tracking them seemed to fade away in the wake of the urgency to get rid of the stolen items and make a quick profit. They weren’t sure if they were already flagged or not, but they knew that getting the Heavenly Sword and Memory Ring out of their hands as quickly as possible was the only way to avoid drawing attention.
“I’ll head to where you are,” Hank said, hanging up and quickly gathering his things. “Let’s go to Dragonville Hotel now.”
Carlisle, who had been sitting quietly, running over every possible scenario in his head, stood up and began to follow Hank toward the door. The tension was palpable in the room. Despite his usual calm demeanor, Carlisle couldn’t shake the unease. They had just crossed a line that couldn’t be uncrossed, and now they had to deal with the consequences.
Heath seemed lost in his thoughts, his cigarette burning down to the filter. “This doesn’t feel right, Hank,” he muttered. “What if this blows up in our faces? What if we get caught?”
Hank shrugged, unfazed by the mounting tension. “The key is to lay low. Get the money. Get out. No one will even know we were involved.”
Carlisle wasn’t so sure. They were dealing with high stakes here, and if things went wrong, the risks could be catastrophic. But they were already too deep into this to back out now. The Heavenly Sword and Memory Ring had already been sold, and they couldn’t afford to be caught with them.
As they left the studio, the weight of what they’d just done seemed to hang in the air. Carlisle’s thoughts drifted to Zachary, the player who had been the victim of their scam. What would Zachary do when he realized the items were gone? Would he trace them back to them, or would it just fade into the chaos of the game?
Either way, Carlisle knew one thing: their lives, both online and offline, had just become a lot more complicated. And they were only getting started.
