Carlisle chuckled softly at Wanda’s playful evasiveness, realizing she wasn’t quite as disappointed as she had appeared. Her quick shift in conversation confirmed that she preferred not to dwell on the subject. He respected that, even if he couldn’t fully understand why she seemed to withdraw so quickly.
Wanda’s smile returned as she focused back on her notes, though there was a slight flush to her cheeks. She couldn’t help but feel a little self-conscious. The conversation with Carlisle was so easy, but moments like these left her wondering if there was more going on beneath the surface.
“You’re welcome to join us whenever you’re free, you know,” she said, glancing up at him with a playful twinkle in her eye. “It’s just a casual dinner with Lily. No need for all the excuses!”
Carlisle’s gaze softened as he leaned back in his seat. “Thanks for the offer. I’ll make sure to take you up on it soon.”
As the class continued, Wanda couldn’t shake the feeling of curiosity about his response to Sarah’s invitation earlier. There had been something in his tone that hinted at more than just a casual decline. But Wanda knew better than to press him on it.
Instead, she focused on the moment, on the mundane things like textbooks and notes, pushing aside the growing thoughts and worries she couldn’t fully express. After all, she had her own plans for the evening—meeting up with Lily, her close friend from high school. It had been far too long since they’d caught up properly.
The bell rang signaling the end of the class. Carlisle stood up and stretched, glancing over at Wanda before heading toward the door. “I’ll catch you later,” he said, his voice warm as always.
Wanda nodded, her heart light despite the questions swirling in her mind. “Take care,” she said, her eyes lingering on him for a moment before she turned back to gather her things.
As she packed up, Phoebe leaned over and whispered, “Wanda, what’s going on between you two? You guys seem so close.”
Wanda paused for a moment, then smiled. “We’re just friends,” she said simply. “Nothing more.”
Phoebe raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced but choosing not to press further. “Uh-huh, sure,” she murmured with a teasing grin.
Wanda could only shake her head, laughing softly as she stood up and followed her out of the classroom. She didn’t have the answers to all the questions, but for now, she was content with the simple truth of their friendship. Everything else could wait.
Tonight, it was just her and Lily.
