The two of them nodded eagerly, hanging on to Carlisle’s every word. He leaned in, lowering his voice, and said, “To be honest, my grandfather is a psychic. I grew up around it, and over time, I’ve picked up some skills in physiognomy. When I saw Lily’s dark forehead, I had a strong feeling that something bad was about to happen to her.”
He knew Sean would have questions, so he prepared an explanation that seemed plausible.
Sean, who had grown up in a large city where anything mystical was viewed with skepticism, gave Carlisle a doubtful look. He turned to Lily, clearly curious. “Do you actually believe him?”
Lily nodded without hesitation, her expression earnest. “I do. The psychics in our village are highly respected.”
Sean picked up his beer and took a long gulp, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Well, if that’s the case, can you predict if I’ll be able to find a girlfriend at university?”
Carlisle scanned Sean’s face, then took his palm, carefully studying it. He muttered to himself as he counted his finger joints, deep in concentration.
Sean shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his nervousness growing as Carlisle seemed to take his task seriously.
Finally, Carlisle opened his eyes dramatically and exclaimed, “Oh my!”
Sean’s heart skipped a beat. “What is it? What did you see?”
Carlisle leaned back in his chair with an exaggerated sigh, looking up as if searching for the right words. “I see a great love life ahead of you. In the next few years, you’ll have many women pursuing you!”
Sean’s eyes lit up, and he eagerly took another swig of beer. “Really? That sounds great!”
Carlisle’s smile faded a little as he leaned in with a more serious expression. “However… none of them will truly like you. They’ll only be after your money.”
Sean’s enthusiasm vanished instantly, his face falling. “Looks like I’m destined to be single throughout university, then!”
Carlisle chuckled, looking toward Lily with a knowing smile. “But there’s still hope. There’s an opportunity right in front of you. If you’re smart, you might be able to turn things around.”
Sean’s attention snapped back to Carlisle, his spirits lifting once more. “You mean I still have a shot at finding true love?”
Carlisle nodded, his smile widening. “There’s always a chance.”
Sean leaned forward eagerly. “Please, give me some advice! What should I do?”
Carlisle’s gaze shifted toward Lily. Sean followed it and immediately flushed bright red, realizing the implication. Was Carlisle suggesting that Lily was his true love?
Lily, who had been silently listening, felt a rush of warmth flood her face. She lowered her head, trying to hide her embarrassment. Her belief in fortune-telling was strong—after all, how else could Carlisle have predicted her danger earlier? And now, with this suggestion, it felt as though fate was speaking.
But despite the growing connection between her and Sean, Lily wasn’t quite ready for a relationship. She wasn’t sure how to process the thought of being involved with someone, especially when their bond was still so new.
The moment was interrupted by the beep of Carlisle’s phone. It was a message from Christine.
Christine: “What private room are you in?”
Carlisle quickly texted her the room number.
A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Sean jumped up to open it, and the moment he saw Christine, his face lit up. “Christine! What are you doing here in Riverland?”
Christine grinned, her cheeks rosy. “I got into Riverland University!”
“I knew you’d make it!” Sean stepped aside, gesturing for her to come in. “Come on in, Christine!”
Christine entered the room, dressed casually in a white short-sleeve shirt and white jeans, her hair pulled back into a ponytail. Her youthful face glowed with innocence and energy.
She greeted Carlisle with a shy smile. “Carlisle…”
Carlisle’s face flushed slightly. He smiled awkwardly and said, “Don’t be so formal with me, Christine. Just sit down!”
Christine took a seat beside Lily, her gaze wandering over the table full of seafood dishes. “You all sure know how to eat in style. I don’t think I could ever afford this in my whole life!”
Sean sat down next to Carlisle and Lily, his grin never fading as he looked between the two women. It seemed as though his evening was about to become even more interesting.
