“What man?” Wanda stopped in her tracks, her brow furrowed in confusion as she looked at Sarah.
“Oh, don’t worry. I won’t tell!” Sarah smirked, clearly enjoying the discomfort she was causing.
Wanda’s cheeks flushed slightly. She was a reserved person, and it was typical for her to be too shy to admit anything. “But I really have no idea what you’re talking about!”
She turned back to drag her suitcase forward, trying to avoid further conversation.
Sarah, however, kept pace behind her. “Wanda, I saw you and that man checking into a hotel last night.”
Wanda halted again, her heart skipping a beat. Sarah stood before her, a smirk playing on her lips. “Just tell me the truth. I’ll keep your secret!”
“He’s my brother…” Wanda’s voice went cold, her face hardening.
Her mind raced. She had clearly checked into different rooms with Zachary, so why was Sarah implying something more? The accusation felt entirely unfair.
“Your brother, huh?” Sarah’s smirk widened, clearly unconvinced.
Sarah saw an opportunity here and wasn’t about to let it go. If she could find something to use against Wanda, she could use it to keep her away from Carlisle.
Wanda clenched her jaw, fighting to remain calm. “Sarah, would you just quit it?” Her voice trembled as tears began to well up in her eyes.
Seeing that Wanda was on the verge of breaking, Sarah’s smirk turned into something more vindictive. “Why don’t you just admit it? We’re in university now. There’s nothing wrong with having a boyfriend!”
Wanda’s soft nature couldn’t withstand the pressure anymore. “His name is Zachary Thompson. He’s my brother, not my boyfriend!” Her voice cracked as tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
Sarah, unfazed by the hurt she had caused, tried to retreat. “Don’t cry. You’re making it seem like I bullied you. With such a wealthy boyfriend like yours, I wouldn’t dare to offend you!” She quickly gathered her things, trying to flee from the tension.
But as she turned to leave, three tall young women stepped into her path, blocking her escape.
The woman at the center of the group was in her twenties, confidently chewing gum as she casually eyed Sarah. She wore large sunglasses and a provocative outfit, her lips painted bright red.
“Are you seniors here to welcome new students?” Sarah asked sweetly, trying to deflect the growing sense of dread. “Could you help me with my luggage? Thank you!”
The woman ignored Sarah’s comment, focusing instead on Wanda. “Wanda, come over here…”
Sarah’s mind raced. Were these women here for Wanda?
“Um… you guys chat. I’ll be heading off first,” Sarah tried to make her exit, but the young woman immediately stepped in her way.
“What… What do you want?” Sarah’s voice wavered, her nerves starting to show.
“Apologize to Wanda,” the woman said coldly, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Sarah took a deep, shaky breath. “I didn’t hit or scold her. Why should I apologize?”
“I told you to apologize! Stop asking so many questions!” The woman behind her snapped, her voice sharp.
Sarah froze, suddenly overwhelmed by the situation. “I… I’m sorry…” she mumbled, her voice barely audible.
The woman raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Haven’t you eaten? Speak louder.”
Tears threatened to fall again as Sarah reluctantly raised her voice. “I’m sorry…”
The woman crossed her arms, eyes narrowing. “Who are you apologizing to?”
With a choked sob, Sarah squeezed out, “I’m sorry, Wanda!”
She couldn’t help but feel humiliated, but she knew she had no choice but to comply. She was new, without any allies here. For now, it was best to back down. She’d remember their faces, though, and once she built up some power, she’d make sure to get her revenge.
“Wanda, feeling better now?” the woman asked with a grin.
“Just let her go. I’m alright now,” Wanda replied softly, not wanting to escalate things further.
The woman gave a playful glance at Sarah and said, “Wanda is my childhood friend. If I ever see you bullying her again, I’ll make sure your school life is a living hell.”
Sarah seethed with anger, but she knew better than to challenge them now. What could this woman possibly do? Expel her from university? It felt unlikely.
“Can I go now?” Sarah asked, her voice tight with barely contained fury.
Without a word, the woman turned her back on Sarah, focusing instead on Wanda. She ruffled Wanda’s hair affectionately and smiled. “It’s been six years since I last saw you. You’ve grown so tall!”
Wanda smiled softly. “Queenie, you’ve become even more beautiful!”
The woman, Queenie Lane, was someone Wanda had known for years. Queenie and Zachary had been childhood sweethearts, engaged since last year. They had plans to marry once Queenie graduated.
After a brief but warm embrace, Queenie smiled again. “Let’s go. I’ll take you to the registration office…”
