Carlisle nodded with a neutral expression, giving a slight glance toward the other man. He wasn’t sure what to make of Heath yet, but he was aware that the gaming world was full of all kinds of people, some more trustworthy than others. The introduction seemed a bit too rehearsed, but he kept his thoughts to himself for the moment.
“And you?” Carlisle asked, shifting his gaze to the second man.
The second man, a taller, more muscular figure with a piercing gaze, stepped forward. “I’m Darren, 24. I graduated high school and have been working odd jobs here and there. I’m level 53 in The Legendary Tale and also with the Pride Protectors.” His voice was more steady, but there was a certain wariness to his tone, as if he didn’t quite trust Carlisle either.
Carlisle took in the information, nodding as he processed it. “Alright, it sounds like you both know your way around the game. As long as you’re willing to work hard, there’s plenty of room for all of us.” He glanced at Owen, who was beaming with pride, and continued, “I’m not here to babysit. I’m building something big, and if you’re serious about this, you’ll get your chance. But if you’re just looking for a quick payout without putting in the effort, then I’ll be the first to let you know it’s not going to work.”
Heath and Darren exchanged a glance but nodded in agreement. Neither of them seemed particularly thrilled about the hard work ahead, but both understood the reality of working with someone as established as Carlisle.
Owen clapped his hands, drawing their attention back to him. “See, I told you Carl would help out! We’re all in this together.”
Carlisle gave a tight smile. He wasn’t entirely convinced about Owen’s friends, but for now, he would give them a chance. After all, as much as he disliked the thought of expanding too quickly, the connections could prove useful in the long run.
“Alright then,” Carlisle said, standing up and extending his hand to Heath and Darren. “Let’s get down to business. But remember, if you want a piece of this, you’ll have to prove your worth.”
Both men shook his hand, but Carlisle noticed the slight tension in their grips. Whether it was a sign of respect or reluctance, he wasn’t sure yet. But he’d keep an eye on them. The last thing he needed was another group trying to steal from him.
As the group continued to chat about their plans for the gaming business, Carlisle couldn’t shake the feeling that things were moving too fast. But, for better or worse, he was already deeply invested in making sure Owen and his friends didn’t derail his progress.
The sun was setting, and while Carlisle’s mind raced with thoughts of business, he couldn’t help but remember the simple, peaceful lunch with Wanda. For a brief moment, he found himself wondering how much longer his life could stay uncomplicated before the pressures of his ambitions completely took over.
