Chapter_73
Arabella stood at the door to Faye’s dark room, irritation building as Faye refused to respond to her. Her tone grew colder, more authoritative as she spoke. “I’ve made the effort to come all the way here, and you’re wasting my time. You know, I could be studying right now. But if you’re not going to cooperate, then I have no choice but to leave.”
Doreen, who had been standing by the door, seemed uncomfortable with the tension in the room. She glanced between Arabella and her daughter, her expression faltering. “Arabella, please, she’s just… well, she’s been like this for days now. Faye’s not in a good place.”
Arabella’s eyes flickered with impatience, but she held herself back. “She doesn’t need coddling; she needs treatment.” Her voice was clipped, as if she had no time for Faye’s emotional state. “I don’t deal with patients who don’t want to help themselves.”
Faye remained still, curled up in her corner, her sobs muffled as she buried her face deeper into her knees. There was a quiet desperation in her movements, but Arabella couldn’t see it. She only saw a spoiled girl who was wasting her time.
Doreen stepped forward, her face filled with concern. “Arabella, please. You have to understand. Faye… she’s been through a lot recently.”
Arabella’s eyes narrowed as she gave Doreen a sharp look. “What she’s been through is irrelevant. If she wants my help, she has to show me that she wants it. I’m not here to baby her.”
A tense silence hung in the air for a moment, before Arabella, growing more frustrated, started to turn on her heel. “I’ve had enough of this. If she doesn’t want treatment, then that’s her choice.”
Just as she began walking toward the door, Doreen hurried to her side. “Arabella, wait,” she said, her voice pleading. “Please, Faye doesn’t know how to deal with this… She needs more than just your medical skills; she needs patience, kindness.”
Arabella paused but didn’t turn around. “If she doesn’t want help, there’s nothing I can do.”
Doreen let out a long sigh, her voice quieter now. “You may be good with medicine, but you don’t seem to understand people. Not everyone is as straightforward as you.”
Arabella’s expression hardened at the remark. “I understand more than you think.” She quickly pushed past Doreen, her patience wearing thin. “If you need someone to coddle her, I’m not the one. I’ll leave.”
As Arabella reached the door, Doreen whispered under her breath, more to herself than to anyone else, “Sometimes, being good at one thing doesn’t mean you’re good at everything.”
Arabella paused, but the words didn’t reach her. With a final glance at Faye, she walked out, the door closing softly behind her.
Meanwhile, in the living room, Bertha, the maid, and Thomas stood by quietly, observing the scene unfold. They had all become accustomed to Arabella’s cold demeanor, but even they couldn’t help but feel the tension that followed her wherever she went.
At the amusement park, Vivienne, Thaddeus, Isolde, and the rest of the group enjoyed the day as best as they could, despite the earlier drama. The sound of children’s laughter and the bright colors of the park were a welcome distraction from the outside world. Isolde and Thaddeus were running around, trying every ride they could find, while Vivienne, leaning back against a bench, let herself relax for the first time in a while.
Leopold and Percival, however, couldn’t shake off the earlier conversation. “Vivienne’s talent is unmatched,” Leopold muttered, his mind still focused on her incredible display of skill. “She could be a force to reckon with in the medical world.”
Percival gave a rare smile, his eyes scanning the park. “Indeed. But we should be careful. People with power, like Vivienne, tend to attract attention. Especially with the kind of influence she can wield.”
Leopold glanced at his brother. “So, you think she might be a threat?”
Percival’s gaze sharpened slightly. “No. But some people might think so. It’s best to keep an eye on her, for her own sake.”
