Chapter_45
The room fell silent as Vivienne’s words hung in the air. Arabella’s smug expression faltered, and both Dorian and Cordelia exchanged confused glances. The calmness in Vivienne’s voice was unshakable, and it caught everyone off guard.
“Teacher?” Arabella repeated, her voice laced with disbelief. “What are you talking about? You don’t even have a high school diploma!”
Vivienne’s lips curled into a slight smile, her eyes steady as she looked at Arabella. “You assumed I wanted to go as a student, didn’t you? Well, I’ve already made other plans.”
Cordelia, who had been silent, blinked in surprise. “Vivienne, are you saying you want to work as a teacher at Cloudcrest High School?”
Vivienne nodded, her expression calm but determined. “I’ve been doing some research. Cloudcrest High School isn’t just for students—it has vacancies for teaching assistants, and I have the qualifications to apply. I’ve already contacted the school, and they’re open to considering me.”
The news was staggering, but there was no doubt in Vivienne’s voice. She had put in the effort, researched the options, and planned ahead. No longer was she the timid girl who had been dependent on others. Vivienne was carving out her own future.
Arabella, still stunned, recovered quickly, her face contorting into a sneer. “A teaching assistant? Don’t make me laugh. You think you can just walk into a school like that? You’re nothing but a high school dropout.”
Vivienne’s gaze never wavered. “I may not have a formal education, but I’ve been tutoring children and adults in my spare time. I have experience. You don’t have to like it, but I’ll prove I can do it.”
Dorian’s voice broke through the tension. “Vivienne… is this something you’re sure about?”
Vivienne met his gaze with resolve. “Yes, I’m sure. I want to do something for myself. I don’t want to rely on anyone else anymore.”
Cordelia nodded slowly, her heart swelling with pride. Vivienne wasn’t just reacting to life’s challenges; she was actively choosing her path. It was something Cordelia admired deeply. “We’ll support you, Vivienne. If this is what you want, we’ll back you up.”
Arabella, still clearly irritated, folded her arms. “Fine, but don’t expect anyone in this family to care about your ‘plans.’ You’re just chasing after things you don’t understand.”
Vivienne turned her attention to Arabella, her smile growing slightly wider. “I’m not doing this for anyone’s approval, Arabella. I’m doing it for myself.”
The room was quiet after that, and though the atmosphere remained tense, there was a subtle shift. Vivienne had asserted herself, and the tone of the conversation had changed. Arabella’s attempt to control her had faltered.
With an almost final air to the conversation, Vivienne said, “I’ll make this work. Don’t worry about me.”
Her calmness and confidence left little room for argument. Arabella, fuming silently, turned on her heel and left without another word, though her mind clearly raced with all the ways she could undermine Vivienne’s plans. But for now, the damage had been done—Vivienne had taken control of her own future.
Dorian and Cordelia exchanged looks, both proud of Vivienne but also concerned for the challenges ahead. Still, they knew one thing for certain: Vivienne had changed. She was no longer the shy, uncertain young woman who had returned to the family. She was determined, ready to face the world on her own terms.
And as the door clicked shut behind Arabella, the family sat in a moment of reflection. Vivienne’s future, it seemed, was in her hands—and no one, not even Arabella, could take that away from her.
