Chapter_100
Vivienne smiled as Isolde rushed over to her, the little girl’s face alight with excitement. It was clear how much Isolde wanted her attention, especially after the tension that had been hanging over their interactions before. The innocence in her expression reminded Vivienne of simpler times.
“Vivienne!” Isolde grinned as she reached her. “The Ferris wheel was so much fun! I almost wanted to go again. You should come with me next time!”
Vivienne crouched down to Isolde’s level, gently ruffling her hair. “Maybe next time, Isolde. I’m glad you enjoyed it though.”
Isolde beamed up at her. “You’re so lucky, Vivienne. You get to be with all these cool people, and you’re so… mysterious!” she said with wide eyes.
Vivienne’s smile faltered for a split second before she hid her emotions again. She wasn’t quite sure how to respond to that. The idea of being mysterious had always followed her, and she wasn’t sure whether it was a compliment or something else entirely.
Meanwhile, Percival stood off to the side, watching the interaction. His eyes narrowed slightly as he observed Vivienne’s cool, collected demeanor. He had a feeling that beneath the surface, there was far more going on in her mind than she let on. But for now, he chose to remain quiet, giving her the space she needed.
Iris, noticing the silence, walked over with a soft smile. “You two seem to be getting along quite well,” she remarked, her voice filled with warmth.
Vivienne nodded, still crouching near Isolde. “Yes, she’s a good kid. Very lively.”
“I’m happy to see you both happy,” Iris said, her voice soft but tinged with an undercurrent of something Vivienne couldn’t quite place. Perhaps it was a trace of nostalgia, or something more.
As Iris turned to join the others, Vivienne rose to her feet, brushing off the slight dust from her pants. She exchanged one last glance with Percival, who was still watching her intently, before turning to join the group.
The night air was cool, and as they all walked toward the next ride, the fireworks continued to light up the sky, casting colorful reflections on the faces of those nearby. Vivienne felt a flicker of warmth in her chest, a strange mix of old memories and new connections. Despite the complexities of her life, moments like this—simple and unburdened—reminded her of what she truly valued.
But she couldn’t fully let go. Not yet. There were still too many pieces of the puzzle that hadn’t clicked into place.
As they strolled toward the next ride, Vivienne’s mind wandered again to her mother, to the questions Iris might have answers to. She hadn’t yet spoken to Iris about everything that had been weighing on her, but tonight, perhaps, would be the time. The amusement park, despite the laughter and the noise around her, felt like a place for more serious conversations. A place for confronting the past.
And maybe, just maybe, she’d find some closure along the way.
