Chapter_69
Percival stood in stunned silence, trying to process Richard’s words. The fact that Evelyn had once saved the entire Ellington family was a bombshell. He had known about her connection to his grandfather, but this revelation took him by surprise. Why didn’t anyone ever mention this before? he thought, his mind racing.
Richard, now more serious than ever, wiped the playful smile off his face. He seemed to realize the gravity of the situation. “Percival,” he said in a low voice, “Evelyn was a woman who kept her cards close. She didn’t want anyone to know how much she was involved with us. If she told me everything, I wouldn’t have been able to keep quiet. You know how I am.”
Percival clenched his jaw. He had been too busy with his own affairs to pay proper attention to the past, and now it was coming back to haunt him. Why was everyone so secretive? What was Evelyn really involved in?
The conversation had taken a turn that Percival hadn’t expected. His mind was spinning with questions about his mother’s involvement with the potion, about the connections to Vivienne’s family, and now this new piece of information that suggested Evelyn was not just a simple family acquaintance but someone who had saved their lives in ways that no one had been willing to explain.
“Do you remember how she saved your family?” Percival asked, his voice sharper now, pressing for answers. “What exactly did she do? Who was she protecting us from?”
Richard scratched his head, a rare seriousness in his eyes. “Honestly, Percival, I don’t have all the details. Evelyn never liked talking about it. All I know is, there was a time when we were facing a major crisis—something about the family business, something we were in over our heads. Your grandfather never mentioned it to me, but Evelyn stepped in and cleared things up. We owed her more than anyone will ever understand.”
Percival’s mind was racing. It was clear Richard didn’t have all the details, but the little he did know was enough to make Percival realize that Evelyn’s involvement in the Ellington family’s survival was more than just a passing favor. She had been instrumental in their success—and possibly more entangled with dangerous dealings than anyone had known.
Vivienne was still processing everything herself, trying to understand her own connections to the mystery surrounding the potion. If Evelyn was involved in saving their family, how deep does this go? she wondered, glancing at Percival, who was clearly shaken by the conversation. The walls between them had always been firm, but now there was an undeniable tension between them, a shared curiosity about their respective family histories.
Percival took a deep breath and finally spoke again, this time calmer but with a touch of finality in his voice. “I need to know more, Richard. If Evelyn was involved in something that could affect Vivienne, we can’t afford to remain in the dark any longer.”
Richard sighed, clearly reluctant but understanding the seriousness of Percival’s tone. “I wish I could tell you everything. But, Percival, there’s something about Evelyn that we’ll never fully understand. Maybe Vivienne will find out more than we could ever have imagined. Just… just be careful.”
Percival nodded, his mind made up. “I will. But we need answers, and we need them fast.”
As Percival turned to leave, his thoughts swirling with new pieces of the puzzle, Vivienne’s words echoed in his mind. What if this is all connected? What if this potion is part of something much larger than any of us can imagine?
Back in the living room, Vivienne was still lost in thought, staring at the chessboard where Dorian and Richard had just been playing. Was there something in Evelyn’s past that could explain her involvement with the potion?
Her fingers brushed the edge of the board as she sat back down, unsure of how much she truly knew about her mother—and how much she was willing to uncover. Whatever answers lay ahead, one thing was certain: the truth was more complicated and dangerous than she had ever imagined.
