Chapter_72
The air in the room seemed to hold its breath as Quinn watched Juliet’s emotions shift between gratitude and uncertainty. Quinn, too, felt a pang of guilt deep in her chest. She had lied to Juliet, manipulating the situation in the hopes of giving the elderly woman a sense of purpose and belonging. But as she saw the tears glistening in Juliet’s eyes, the weight of her decision didn’t feel as heavy.
Life, Quinn realized, wasn’t always about being truthful to others. Sometimes, it was about offering people a reason to keep going, something that could fill the emptiness they felt within. Juliet had been alone for so long, struggling to survive in a damp shack, and Quinn saw an opportunity to bring her some comfort—even if it meant bending the truth.
Juliet wiped her eyes quickly, trying to regain her composure. “I can’t believe this is happening,” she murmured, voice thick with emotion. “You really want me to come live with you?”
Quinn nodded, a determined smile on her lips. “Yes, I want you to. I know how hard things have been for you, and I want you to be with us. You won’t have to worry about anything anymore.”
A tremor of relief passed through Juliet’s frail body as she slowly stood up, her legs unsteady but her spirit suddenly brighter. “If Alexander truly agrees… then I won’t hesitate. I will do whatever I can to help.”
Quinn felt her heart lighten. Alexander’s agreement had been more than just a formality. It was a chance to change something, to right a few wrongs, even if those wrongs were only in her mind.
The sound of the taxi’s engine in the distance signaled the moment to move forward. Quinn reached out to help Juliet, guiding her toward the car. She glanced back at the crumbling shack one last time, feeling a mix of regret and relief.
As the taxi drove away from the place that had once been a sanctuary for Juliet, Quinn couldn’t help but wonder if this decision would be enough to bring real change for both of them. The past was never easy to outrun, but perhaps, just perhaps, it could be healed, little by little, as long as they didn’t face it alone.
The ride to their home was quick, and as they pulled up, Quinn could feel the weight of the future pressing in on her. What had she done? What kind of life awaited them there? Would Juliet’s presence in their home change the dynamic with Alexander? Quinn’s mind buzzed with the endless possibilities, but for now, there was little she could do except move forward.
She helped Juliet out of the car, her heart swelling with a mix of hope and dread. Juliet, for all her frailty, seemed lighter, like the weight of the world had been lifted just a little. Quinn squeezed her hand gently, offering a silent promise of better things to come.
Inside the house, Quinn found herself standing still for a moment, as if bracing for what was to come. Would Alexander be welcoming? Would he question her motives? She didn’t know, but what she did know was that she couldn’t go back now. The changes had already begun.
With a deep breath, Quinn led Juliet inside, her voice steady. “This is home now, Juliet. You’re safe here.”
