Oliver contemplated the situation carefully before finally speaking up. “I’ll approach Alexander. If he agrees to back off, we might be able to resolve this mess.” He understood the larger consequences. If they continued to focus on the sabotaged brakes and clashed with Alexander, the Vanderbilt family would bear the full weight of the repercussions.
After all, it was Abigail who had struck someone with her car. Alexander was holding all the cards. The smartest move was to appeal to his sense of fairness, to ask him to let the matter slide.
Mr. Vanderbilt nodded gravely. “That’s our only option now. You’ve got a rapport with him. Try to convince him.”
“Alright,” Oliver replied, glancing back at Abigail. She was slumped in despair, likely planning to keep a low profile for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, Quinn scoured the internet, her mind racing with each passing minute. The vitriol against Abigail was palpable, a sea of online hatred swelling with every post. A typical car accident might trend for a day or two before fading into obscurity, but this—this was different. Abigail, the heiress, was at the heart of a scandal that had quickly spiraled out of control. It wasn’t just a crash; it was a goldmine for sensation-seeking bloggers and the jealous masses.
Despite the growing storm online, Quinn could find no updates on Abigail’s fate. She sent her a message, but there was no reply. She couldn’t bring herself to seek her out in person, knowing that doing so might only escalate Alexander’s wrath. She felt trapped—isolated in her home, consumed with worry.
At the office, Kyle relayed the latest developments.
“With everything happening right now, we can’t keep this under wraps. The authorities will get involved, and Abigail will likely end up behind bars,” he said.
Alexander flipped through a file with detached indifference. “And the two thugs?”
“Taken care of. Reduced to ashes.”
“Understood. You’re dismissed.”
Kyle gave a brief nod and glanced toward the cubicle area. Getty, injured and recovering at home, was absent, leaving a quiet vacancy in the office. He never would have guessed that Alexander would retaliate against Abigail on Getty’s behalf. Abigail’s slap had been a minor incident, yet Alexander had clearly held onto the grudge, and now, it seemed, he was settling old scores.
Getty was thrilled. She had assumed Alexander wouldn’t defend her, but he had gone to great lengths to make sure Abigail paid for her actions. Had she not been bedridden, Getty would have rushed to the office to shower him with affection. Instead, she posted on social media, captioning a photo with, “Those who love you will love you in their own way.”
Getty’s friend list was vast—she had added almost everyone from Alexander’s circle, and since they shared many mutual friends, her post quickly gained traction. The news spread like wildfire. Many people recalled the incident at The Cube, when Alexander had forced Abigail to apologize to Getty for slapping her. Now, with Abigail’s public downfall, Getty’s post only fueled the speculation. It set tongues wagging.
Quinn, too, had access to Getty’s posts. Getty kept her in the loop, mainly to showcase her happy moments. But since Quinn didn’t share many mutual friends with Getty, she could only view a handful of comments, such as:
Spencer: “I can’t believe this.” Freya: “Could it be what I think it is?” Last Night’s Dream: “Getty is my new idol!” Ryan: “What’s going on? I’ve been away and can’t keep up!”
Quinn quickly exited the social media app, her gaze heavy with thought. So, Alexander had done all this for Getty. She had worked at Abigail’s store before, and Alexander had never seemed to care about her. But ever since Abigail had slapped Getty, his attitude had shifted. Now, with Abigail’s latest mistake, it seemed that Alexander was using the opportunity to settle old scores.
Quinn’s defiance had only stoked Alexander’s thirst for revenge.
