Chapter_11
The words hit Quinn like a lightning strike, leaving her breathless. Her mind struggled to process the meaning behind Abigail’s words, but her heart seemed to understand long before her thoughts could catch up.
Pregnant?
Quinn blinked, her eyes searching Abigail’s face for any sign that this was a joke, some cruel prank. But Abigail’s expression was earnest, even worried. The silence between them felt suffocating as Quinn’s mind raced, trying to grasp the gravity of what she’d just heard.
Abigail seemed to sense Quinn’s shock and quickly added, “I know it’s… a lot to take in. But the test report—it’s clear. You’re pregnant.”
Quinn felt her chest tighten as her breathing quickened. Pregnant. The word echoed in her mind, bouncing around like an intruder. She could feel her pulse pounding in her ears, her fingers trembling as she gripped the bed sheets.
Her thoughts spiraled. She hadn’t planned for this. In fact, she hadn’t planned for much of anything in the recent months. She’d been struggling with a sense of direction, constantly questioning her place in the world, wondering if she could even keep up with everything happening around her. And now… pregnant.
The room felt smaller. The walls seemed to close in around her as the weight of the revelation pressed down on her. She glanced at Abigail, trying to process the words, trying to make sense of what this meant for her.
“Are you… sure?” Quinn asked, her voice barely a whisper, the tremor in her voice betraying her disbelief.
Abigail nodded. “The test, the doctors—they confirmed it. You’re pregnant, Quinn.”
Quinn’s mind spun. She thought about everything that had happened in the past months, her feelings for Alexander, her attempts to distance herself, her struggles to keep her emotions in check. But this—this—was something entirely different. This wasn’t something she could ignore or push aside.
She closed her eyes, the weight of the situation slowly sinking in. It wasn’t just the pregnancy itself—it was everything that came with it. The potential consequences. The responsibilities. The uncertainty of how it would change her life. And, of course, the question of what Alexander would think, if he even knew.
“What am I supposed to do now?” Quinn whispered, almost to herself, her hand now resting on her stomach as if to protect the small life growing inside her. The question was heavy on her heart, and yet she knew there was no easy answer.
Abigail’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Quinn, you don’t have to figure everything out right now. I’ll be here to help you.”
Quinn glanced up at Abigail, seeing the sincerity in her eyes. A small part of her felt comforted by the offer, but the rest of her was consumed by fear and confusion. How could she navigate this alone?
And then there was Alexander. Her thoughts turned to him, and the weight of his absence felt even heavier now. What would he say? How would he react?
“Alexander doesn’t know, does he?” Quinn signed, her fingers trembling as she looked at Abigail, who shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
Abigail hesitated before answering. “No. He doesn’t know yet. And, Quinn, I’m not sure how he’ll take it. But I know you’re strong. You can handle this.”
Quinn nodded, though her heart felt anything but strong. She wasn’t sure how she would handle it. But one thing was certain—her life was about to change in ways she couldn’t even begin to imagine.
