Chapter_53
Quinn felt a pang of uncertainty as she nodded in response to the doctor’s question. The weight of her decision hung heavy in her chest. She wanted to keep the baby, but was she truly ready for the responsibility that came with it? The doctor’s gaze softened, as if sensing the turmoil within her.
“You should stay here for observation,” the doctor continued, his voice gentle but firm. “It will be safer for both you and the baby.”
Quinn’s thoughts spiraled as she considered the implications of the doctor’s suggestion. The decision seemed almost too big for her to make on her own, but at the same time, it felt right. She couldn’t deny the small flicker of hope that had grown inside her when she thought about carrying the baby to term. Even if the circumstances weren’t ideal, she knew this was a moment in her life she couldn’t ignore.
“Okay,” she typed, her fingers trembling slightly as she confirmed her choice.
The doctor nodded, seemingly reassured by her decision. “I’ll have the staff prepare a room for you. You’ll be more comfortable here while we monitor your condition.”
Quinn sat back in the sterile waiting area, the soft hum of the hospital around her. It felt surreal to be here, grappling with the reality of her situation. She thought about Alexander, about his coldness, his distant affection, and yet the brief moments of tenderness that lingered between them. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was somehow tied to this decision, to this life she was now contemplating bringing into the world.
Her phone buzzed, snapping her from her reverie. She glanced down to find a message from Abigail.
“How’s everything? I know you’re going through a lot, but just know I’m here for you. Let me know if you need anything.”
Quinn’s heart ached at the words. Abigail had been her rock during these chaotic months. She had always been there, offering support when Quinn had no one else to turn to. It felt like a small lifeline in the storm she was navigating. She quickly typed a reply:
“I’m at the hospital. They want me to stay for observation.”
Before she could finish the message, her phone rang. It was an unknown number, but instinctively, she knew who it was.
“Quinn,” Alexander’s voice came through the line, steady and unyielding. “What’s going on?”
She hesitated for a moment, wondering how much to tell him. How could she explain the weight of everything she was feeling when he had been so detached? But she couldn’t bring herself to hide it from him, not this time.
“I’m at the hospital,” she said quietly. “I… I might be pregnant.”
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, the silence thick and heavy. Then, in a tone that was hard to decipher, Alexander spoke again.
“Is that all? Or is there more?”
His question hung in the air, leaving Quinn to wonder if there was more he needed to hear, or if he was just trying to process the news in his own way. She swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the phone. The thought of telling him about the baby, about everything that had happened, felt almost impossible.
“I’m staying here for observation,” she replied, her voice small. “I don’t know what’s next.”
“Let me know if you need anything,” Alexander said after a moment, his voice softening, but just as quickly, he added, “I’ll take care of things on my end.”
Quinn wasn’t sure what to make of his words, but there was something in them that felt different. The usual coldness had slipped away, replaced by something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
“Okay,” she murmured, unsure of what to expect next.
As she ended the call, Quinn couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of unease. What did Alexander mean by “I’ll take care of things”? Was it another empty promise, or was there something more to his words?
Her thoughts swirled as she waited in the sterile hospital room, the silence pressing in around her. The decision she had made was only the beginning of a much larger journey. And with Alexander’s shadow looming over everything, Quinn knew she had no idea where it would lead.
