Chapter_54
The memory hit Quinn like a sudden wave, and she found herself frozen in place as the past collided with the present. Alexander’s words echoed in her mind, a promise he had made all those years ago. “Promise me you’ll protect her.”
That night, in the face of a tragedy no one expected, Quinn had kept that promise without hesitation. She’d been scared—terrified, even—but her resolve had never wavered. She’d carried him through the woods, and when she saw the ambulance pull up, it had been the first real relief she’d felt in hours.
Now, as she thought of those words again, she realized how much had changed. How much he had changed. It was hard to reconcile the confident, distant man he had become with the one she had once desperately tried to save. The man she thought she would never leave.
Quinn sat down slowly on the couch, her hands gripping her phone so tightly her knuckles whitened. Abigail’s messages continued to flash across the screen, but her mind was miles away.
What happened to us? Quinn wondered. What happened to the man who promised me…
Her thoughts were interrupted by a message from Abigail, pushing her out of the past and back into the present.
“Hey, don’t be so distant! You never know, I might just win that bike and a cool million. We’ll celebrate when you get that divorce. World tour, remember? Just the two of us.”
The words hit her differently now. It was a stark reminder of what Abigail’s world was like—bold, unpredictable, and full of energy. A world Quinn had once been a part of but now felt increasingly distant from, as she found herself tethered to a life with Alexander she couldn’t seem to break free from.
Quinn’s fingers hovered over the screen as she thought about Abigail’s offer. A million dollars. A world tour. Freedom. It sounded so different from the life she had now. The life where Alexander’s coldness and occasional moments of tenderness twisted her emotions.
Is this really the life I want? Quinn asked herself. The question hung in the air, unanswered, as the faint sound of wind from Abigail’s message replayed in her mind.
Quinn took a deep breath, reminding herself that the decision to keep the baby was hers alone. Alexander’s presence, his money, his twisted form of affection—all of it weighed heavily on her, but at the end of the day, she would have to live with the choices she made.
After a long pause, Quinn typed a quick reply to Abigail, trying to dismiss the unsettling thoughts clouding her mind.
“Good luck with the race. You know I’ll be cheering for you, even if I’m not there in person. And let’s talk about that world tour sometime soon.”
She sent the message before she could overthink it. Abigail would get her support, but for now, Quinn needed time—time to reflect on her own life and the difficult path ahead.
As Quinn settled back against the couch, the familiar hum of the television filled the room. She didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, or what the future held for her and Alexander, but one thing was certain: she couldn’t continue living in limbo. It was time to decide what she truly wanted for herself.
And maybe, just maybe, that decision didn’t involve him at all.
