Chapter_29
Quinn’s breath caught in her throat. For a moment, the words hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating. She had been angry for days, weeks even, since she left the villa. But hearing him ask, as if genuinely perplexed by her emotions, only fueled the fire within her.
“Are you angry with me?” he had asked, his voice softer now, almost vulnerable.
Quinn’s eyes narrowed, her fists clenching at her sides. Was he serious? After everything he had put her through, after his constant dismissals, his neglect, now he was asking if she was angry?
“Why do you always do this?” she snapped, the hurt in her voice palpable. “Why do you act like I don’t matter? You’re so consumed with Getty and your business, and yet you expect me to sit here and just accept it. You think I should just stay quiet, be the obedient wife, while you get to live your life however you want.”
Her words spilled out in a rush, unfiltered and raw. The anger had been building for so long, and now it was pouring out of her, as though she could finally breathe again.
Alexander didn’t move at first, his jaw tightening. His eyes flicked to her swollen lips, the tears she had tried to hold back. Then, without a word, he reached for her, but Quinn recoiled instinctively, pulling back from his touch.
“Don’t,” she muttered, shaking her head. “I don’t want your touch. Not like this.”
For the first time in a long while, Alexander seemed to hesitate. The anger in his eyes softened, but there was no apology. No acknowledgment of the hurt he had caused her. His grip loosened, his hands falling by his sides as he stared at her with a mix of frustration and confusion.
“Why did you leave?” he asked finally, his voice strained. “I don’t understand why you would just disappear.”
Quinn’s throat tightened, and she swallowed hard. “You didn’t want me anymore,” she whispered. “You made that clear when you chose Getty. When you pushed me aside without even a second thought. So I left. I thought I could find something… better. Something that didn’t involve you and your games.”
Her voice cracked on the last sentence, and she quickly wiped her eyes. She wasn’t going to cry in front of him. Not again.
Alexander took a step toward her, his expression faltering for the first time since he arrived. His hand reached out, but this time, it was gentler. “I didn’t… I didn’t want that,” he said quietly, as if confessing a long-buried truth. “But I didn’t know how to fix it. I didn’t know how to make you stay.”
Quinn swallowed, forcing herself to meet his eyes. She had been waiting for some kind of explanation, but what he said didn’t feel like enough. “You never tried,” she replied softly. “You never really cared. Not about me. Not about us.”
Her voice was steady now, no longer wavering. She had made her peace with the fact that he wouldn’t change, that she was just a fleeting part of his world. She wasn’t going to beg for his attention anymore.
“Quinn…” he started again, his voice tinged with regret, but she raised her hand to stop him.
“No,” she said firmly. “Don’t say anything else. It’s too late. I’m not coming back.”
There was a long silence between them, the weight of her words hanging in the air like a thick fog. Alexander looked as though he had been struck, his face pale, but Quinn didn’t feel any satisfaction in his distress. She just felt… empty. Empty and free.
Finally, she turned away from him, her gaze fixed on the floor. “You don’t get to decide my future anymore, Alexander,” she said quietly, her voice steady but firm. “I will take care of myself. And when the baby comes, I’ll do that alone, too.”
As she moved toward the door, she could feel him watching her, but she didn’t look back. Not this time. She had made her decision, and she was walking away—away from him, away from the life she had known. Quinn wasn’t sure what lay ahead, but she knew she would never again be the woman who waited for someone else’s approval.
The sound of his voice calling her name echoed through the empty room, but Quinn didn’t stop. She had already left him behind.
