Chapter_13
Quinn froze at the sound of the voice—familiar, deep, and full of a presence that still made her heart race, despite everything. Slowly, she turned around, her hand instinctively moving to cover the ultrasound report.
There, standing in the doorway, was Alexander. His gaze was unreadable, his posture tense, as if he had just walked into the room without any warning.
For a moment, the room seemed to hold its breath. Quinn’s pulse quickened, her emotions in turmoil. She wanted to say something, to explain everything that was going on in her life, but her throat felt tight, words escaping her. Instead, she simply stood there, clutching the report to her chest.
Alexander stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of her, the way she was holding the paper. His gaze shifted to the drawer beneath the coffee table, where the prescribed meds were hidden. It was as if he knew there was something she wasn’t telling him, something important.
“What’s that?” he asked, his voice cool and distant, though a hint of suspicion lingered in the air.
Quinn felt a lump form in her throat. She knew this moment had to come. She knew she couldn’t keep this secret forever. But she wasn’t sure if she could handle his reaction—if it would be the same as before, cold and indifferent, or if it would be different now.
She swallowed, her fingers trembling slightly as she lowered the report. There was no going back now.
“It’s a… ultrasound,” she signed, each movement precise, as though she was weighing each word carefully. “I’m pregnant, Alexander.”
For a moment, there was complete silence. Alexander stood there, his eyes flickering to the report in her hands before lifting his gaze to meet hers. The tension in the room felt palpable, like it could snap at any second. He didn’t say anything for a long time, just stared at her, his expression unreadable.
Quinn’s heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to look away. She needed him to understand, to see that this was real—not just a mistake or something to be brushed aside.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Alexander spoke, his voice quieter this time, almost reluctant. “You’re sure?”
The question, though simple, made her feel exposed. Of course, she was sure. She’d seen the ultrasound herself. She had felt it—felt the weight of this pregnancy, the new reality she was facing.
“Yes,” Quinn signed again, the words still heavy on her lips. “I’m sure.”
Alexander ran a hand through his hair, his jaw tightening as if he were trying to process everything. She could see the conflict in his eyes, the turmoil he was no doubt feeling. Part of her wanted to reach out to him, to soften the harshness that hung between them, but she couldn’t—she wouldn’t. Not anymore.
He looked at her, then at the ultrasound report in her hands, and sighed, the weight of the moment pressing down on him.
“This changes everything,” he said quietly.
Quinn nodded, a mixture of sadness and resolve in her expression. She knew it would change everything. But not in the way he might have hoped. This time, she wasn’t going to let him dictate her choices. She wasn’t going to let him make decisions for her—or for their child.
She took a deep breath and said, “I’m keeping the baby, Alexander. And this time, I’m doing it for myself.”
Alexander’s eyes flickered with something—perhaps surprise, perhaps frustration—but he didn’t argue. He just stood there, as if weighing her words. Then, without another word, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Quinn alone with her thoughts and the growing life inside her.
As he disappeared from her sight, Quinn felt the weight of her decision settle around her like a blanket. She had made her choice. And from this moment on, her life would no longer be defined by Alexander, by his actions or his indifference. It was her turn now—her turn to decide what she wanted, what she needed.
And no matter what, she would protect this baby. It was the only thing that mattered now.
