Chapter_21
“Alexander, what’s going on? You seem distracted.” Getty had been sitting in the car for a while, noticing that he’d already smoked two cigarettes, yet they hadn’t moved from the parking spot. Alexander took the last drag from his cigarette before turning to look at Getty.
“Feeling better?” he asked, his voice low.
“Yes, thankfully it’s nothing serious,” Getty responded, though she still felt a bit uneasy. The situation had escalated so quickly, and she hadn’t had a chance to process it properly. “I’m not really in the mood right now. What do you want to eat?”
Alexander rubbed his temples, his face showing signs of exhaustion. “Just a bit of trouble,” he muttered, starting the car and pulling out of the parking lot.
Getty raised an eyebrow. “Something happened at work?”
He gave a noncommittal shrug. “A bit of trouble.” His voice was distant as he focused on the road.
Getty, more of a nominal secretary than an actual assistant in Alexander’s company, wasn’t privy to the specifics of his business dealings. Though she was well-paid, she was often left out of the major decisions.
Wanting to offer comfort but unsure how, she decided to remain quiet. Reaching for her phone, Getty began playing a game—her favorite distraction when boredom crept in. Her current obsession was Dragon Vein Street, a game she had heavily invested in.
Last month, in a bid to outdo the second-highest spender, Getty had spent over five million on Dragon Vein Street—all on Alexander’s credit card. He had given her a supplementary card with practically no spending limit, though purchases over ten million required prior approval.
Usually, he had no objections to her spending, but today, she sensed something was off.
“Hey, Alexander,” she said, her voice light with excitement, “they’re casting real people for a New Year’s promotional video for the game. I want to audition.”
“Mhm,” Alexander responded absently, his grip tight on the steering wheel.
Getty’s mind raced with possibilities. Could you help me get in touch with them? They wouldn’t dare turn down your referral. She adored the game, and being the face of the promotional campaign would be a huge opportunity.
Her guild friends already called her the “rich girl.” If she could star in the ad, everyone would recognize her—not just for her wealth, but for her beauty. The thought of the recognition, the admiration, made her giggle with delight.
Alexander, who usually indulged her every wish, would have no problem making the necessary arrangements.
Despite the fact that many of his friends couldn’t understand his affection for Getty—she wasn’t particularly graceful or intelligent, and often came across as bratty and presumptuous—he was always there for her. Some believed he loved her for her flaws, her shallowness included.
But Getty knew better. She was careful not to overstep with him. Her every move, every intention, was transparent to Alexander, and he seemed to appreciate her exactly as she was—flaws and all. It was a delicate balance, one she had perfected.
As soon as Getty voiced her desire to participate in the promotional video, Alexander didn’t hesitate. He immediately called his assistant to make the necessary arrangements.
At VX Games, the producers were caught off guard by the unexpected call that disrupted their plans.
“Seriously, why is Alexander getting involved in this?” Ellis muttered, clearly puzzled. “Does he really need the cash?”
