Chapter 55
Elizabeth had always liked Tiffany because she was someone whom Matthew loved. Despite Tiffany’s gentle, well-behaved demeanor, Elizabeth had an unsettling feeling that she didn’t truly know the girl. There always seemed to be a thin veil that concealed Tiffany’s true self.
“I-It’s nothing. I was just thinking about how lonely you must feel living on your own in the Kings Residence,” Tiffany said, feigning concern with a soft smile. “From now on, I’ll visit you more often whenever I can.”
Elizabeth chuckled warmly. “Haha, that would be lovely. I do get a little bored when I’m alone at home…”
Just as Elizabeth was about to agree, she paused. Veronica had now become her god-granddaughter, and if Tiffany was allowed to freely come and go, it might cause unnecessary complications for Veronica.
With a swift change of heart, she corrected herself. “However, after being alone for so long, I’m afraid I might not be used to having company. I appreciate your kindness, but you should spend more time with Matthew whenever you’re free. The two of you should go out for walks, movies—like most young couples do.”
Tiffany nodded, her heart sinking with resignation. She had hoped to spend time with Matthew, but he wouldn’t give her the chance.
Meanwhile, Veronica was being shoved into an ambulance. As the doors slammed shut, she scanned the vehicle with a sharp eye, her mind working quickly despite the fear clawing at her chest. There was nothing she could use to escape.
Bang!
The door locked, and four strong men filed into the ambulance, while the ‘attending doctor’ took the driver’s seat.
Panic mixed with cold determination flooded Veronica. She knew she had to act fast. Her gaze fell to two syringes on a nearby tray. Anesthesia, or perhaps something stronger—whatever it was, it was meant for her.
Using the confined space to her advantage, she staggered toward the front, feigning weakness. The men were seated behind her, and she quickly grabbed the syringes, keeping her actions as subtle as possible.
She glanced back to ensure the men weren’t watching, then kicked one of them with all her might. The force of the impact knocked him backward, and the others toppled over as they tried to catch him.
In the narrow ambulance, the fallen men struggled to get up. Seizing the moment, Veronica jumped onto them, syringes in hand, and injected two of the men—one in the chest, the other in the thigh. She didn’t know if the spots would be effective, but one thing was certain: the dosage was strong.
“What the hell is this?” one of the men shouted.
“What are you doing?” another demanded, his voice rising in panic.
“She stole the anesthesia!”
Veronica’s hands trembled as she watched the men begin to lose control, but her mind was focused. The anesthesia was no joke—she had no idea how it would affect her if it had been injected into her, but she was sure it could knock her out cold, or worse.
“Damn you, b*tch!” One of the men grabbed her by the hair, yanking her to her feet before delivering a hard kick to her stomach.
“Ouch!” Veronica staggered, pain shooting through her abdomen. She slammed into the back of the ambulance and bounced off, crashing to the floor. “Hiss…”
She gritted her teeth, the pain threatening to overwhelm her, but she didn’t have time to rest. She had to keep fighting.
“You fcking btch—” The man at the front spat, only to falter mid-sentence. He suddenly grabbed his head and shook it violently before crumpling to the floor.
The other man beside him collapsed as well, his body going limp.
Veronica’s eyes widened as she realized what had happened: the anesthesia had worked faster than she had anticipated. That’s one hell of a dosage!
The remaining two men, still standing, exchanged a grim look.
“Looks like we’ve underestimated this b*tch,” one muttered, his expression dark with fury. They spat on the floor before charging toward her.
Despite the searing pain from the earlier kick, Veronica’s instincts kicked in. She glanced at a fire extinguisher in the corner of the ambulance. It was too far to reach with the men between her and it, but she was resourceful. She couldn’t let them capture her without a fight.
“What do you want? Floch wants you to kidnap me, but he didn’t say you could kill me!” Veronica’s voice trembled with feigned fear, trying to buy herself a moment.
“Hmph. Don’t blame us,” one of the men sneered. “We’re just doing this for the money.”
He lunged at her, but Veronica grabbed a nearby apparatus and swung it at him. The lightweight object didn’t cause much damage, but it distracted him long enough for her to make a break for the fire extinguisher.
She leaped over the unconscious bodies of the men and dashed toward the corner, where the fire extinguisher sat. She grabbed it, but the other man was quick—he grabbed her by the hair again, yanking it painfully.
Veronica gritted her teeth and jerked her head back, using her shorter hair to slip out of his grasp. Then, with swift determination, she seized the fire extinguisher and turned, slamming it down hard onto his head.
The man collapsed instantly, and the last one standing reached for the extinguisher. Veronica struggled against his strength, but he wasn’t quick enough. With a powerful kick, she landed a blow to his groin, causing him to howl in pain and release his hold.
As he bent over, clutching himself, Veronica wasted no time. She pulled the pin on the fire extinguisher, aimed, and sprayed the dry powder directly into his face.
“Cough! Cough!” The man choked violently, clutching his throat in agony as the powder clogged his airways.
Not giving him a second to recover, Veronica turned and aimed the extinguisher at the other man who had just begun to stir. She sprayed him directly in the face, and the force of the powder knocked him back.
The man dropped to the ground, completely overwhelmed, and he sat in the corner, defeated.
Exhausted, Veronica leaned against the wall of the ambulance, gasping for breath. Without wasting another second, she pressed the emergency button, and the door slid open.
She could see the car behind the ambulance through the opening. Grabbing the extinguisher one last time, she tossed it on the ground and bolted. Her heart pounded in her chest as the wind whipped past her, but she knew she couldn’t stop now. She had a chance, and she was going to take it.
