Chapter 25
“Nah… he’s young and strong. He won’t starve to death even if he skips a meal,” Veronica said, waving her hand dismissively. In truth, though, she was planning to treat Xavier to lunch later.
However, the moment she spoke, Daniella shot her a death glare. “Hurry up and go.”
“But, I…” Veronica faltered, unsure of what to say. Left with no choice, she turned to Xavier and said, “Come on. Let’s go! Time to get you something to eat.”
“Oh, it’s fine, Mrs. Murphy. I have some matters to take care of at my company. I’ll leave now, but I’ll come back to visit later.”
“Is that so?” Daniella asked, her voice tinged with concern.
“Yeah, I’ll be back,” Xavier replied, flashing a smile before he left the ward. Veronica followed him to the elevator.
“Thanks a lot, buddy! I’ll treat you to a meal sometime later. And just so you know, after seeing you visit a couple of times, my mom is convinced you’re my boyfriend. I’m sure she won’t ask you to come by again after this,” Veronica said with a grin.
“Bye…” Xavier muttered, his usual mischievous smile nowhere to be found. He simply waved and left.
Once he was out of sight, he made a phone call. “Help me look up information on Veronica Murphy and Tiffany Larson.”
Meanwhile, back upstairs in the ward, Veronica returned to Daniella’s side. “Mom, can you please stop asking Xavier to come over? He’s really busy with work.”
“Alright, alright. I know,” Daniella replied, waving her hand dismissively.
After losing her job at the club, Veronica’s days had become a whirlwind of food deliveries. Rain or shine, she was always on the move.
Two days later, Veronica received a call from Thomas. He told her to pack her things and prepare to move to the Kings Residence the day after tomorrow. Thomas also mentioned that once Young Master Matthew had received the results of the investigation into the car accident, he would notify her immediately.
Veronica didn’t feel she had any right to negotiate, so she agreed. She ended the call, exhausted from her long day, and soon fell asleep after watching a variety show.
Pregnancy had left her perpetually tired, and with her demanding schedule, it was no wonder she was often drained.
The following day was bright and sunny, and Veronica got up to begin another day of work.
Meanwhile, the Hilton Hotel was preparing for an exclusive event: the engagement party of Matthew and Tiffany. The hotel had been reserved entirely for the occasion, with a photo of Matthew and Tiffany prominently displayed at the entrance. The words “Matthew and Tiffany’s Engagement Party” lit up the LED screen, signaling the start of the high-profile event.
From early in the morning, luxury cars began arriving at the Hilton, and elites from all over Bloomstead walked along the red carpet into the lobby. The buzz of cameras clicking and reporters shouting questions filled the air.
However, Matthew, one of the key figures of the event, was nowhere near the Hilton. He was in the President’s office of Spinfluence Group, buried in work. To him, the engagement party was just a formality. Even the urgent documents in his hand seemed more important than the upcoming celebration.
On the other hand, Tiffany was preparing for the big day in her boudoir at Larson Residence. She wore a custom-made dress sent by Matthew, and her long hair was curled to perfection. Her makeup was soft and natural, and she adorned herself with a pair of limited-edition earrings, a necklace, and a headpiece. Tiffany looked like a princess.
Rachel, Tiffany’s mother, couldn’t stop staring at her daughter in the mirror. “Oh, my. Our Tiffy is really beautiful.”
Tiffany smiled, her face glowing with excitement. “Mom, I’m finally getting married to Matthew! I finally got what I’ve always wanted.”
“You’re a lady of both talent and beauty in Bloomstead. Of course, you’ll get what you wish for,” Rachel said proudly.
As the two women shared a heartfelt moment, Tiffany asked, “What about Veronica? Did you make arrangements for her?”
“Don’t worry. It’s all taken care of,” Rachel assured her.
“Then let’s go. It’s getting late.”
“Come, let me hold your hand.”
The mother and daughter duo exchanged loving smiles as they left for the engagement party.
Meanwhile, Veronica was groggily waking up, her body still feeling the exhaustion from the past few days. After washing up and applying her makeup, she looked at the pile of cosmetics in front of her. These were special products she had found online, ones that wouldn’t wear off easily in rain or wind.
She knew the makeup wasn’t good for her skin, but she couldn’t afford to reveal her real appearance just yet. The last thing she wanted was to provoke the Larsons.
Veronica’s phone buzzed with a new delivery order. It was from Wakey Bakey, and the destination was the Hilton Hotel.
Glancing at the note attached to the order, Veronica saw the request to deliver the food through the back entrance of the hotel.
“Of course, it’s another high-profile event,” Veronica muttered under her breath. The front entrance was overflowing with people, and she knew it would be impossible to navigate through.
She quickly accepted the order and made her way to the Hilton Hotel. As she approached, she saw the crowds gathered outside and realized that something important was going on.
She pulled her motorcycle to the back entrance and called the client. “Hello, your delivery has arrived.”
“Come in through the back entrance. I’m busy in the banquet hall on the second floor. Just tell the guards it’s for David Wagner, and they’ll let you through,” the voice on the other end instructed.
“Got it,” Veronica replied, hanging up the phone.
She parked her bike and entered the building, food in hand. The back entrance was well-secured, with bodyguards stationed at every corner. When Veronica identified herself as the delivery person, they allowed her in.
“Manager Wagner? Sure, you may enter, but make sure to leave quickly after your delivery.”
“Thank you,” Veronica said, nodding.
As she walked through the lobby, she couldn’t help but notice the crowd. Upper-class socialites, many of them celebrities, mingled with each other, dressed to the nines. Veronica recognized some of them from TV.
She had no time to dwell on it, though. Her delivery was nearly late, so she hurried up the stairs to the second floor.
However, just as she reached the entrance to the banquet hall, she stopped in her tracks.
“Wait, something’s off…”
The sight of a poster near the entrance caught her attention. She recognized it instantly. The photo depicted Matthew and Tiffany—Matthew with his usual impassive expression, and Tiffany smiling in his arms, radiant with happiness.
Veronica took a step back, her heart pounding. The takeaway box fell from her hands and hit the ground with a loud thud.
“It’s their engagement party?” she whispered in shock, her mind racing.
