Chapter 20
Matthew had promised to give Veronica five minutes, but as usual, he broke his word.
This is too much!
When Veronica saw him walk right past her, she couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed his arm with a frustrated cry. “Matthew Kings, I even let go of the fact that you slept with me, so can you please make sure the expert team treats my dad? I’ll pay for the surgery! I have money!”
She had originally planned to ask for a discount on the hospital processing fee, but Matthew’s cruelty made that seem impossible. Just three minutes ago, she had felt a glimmer of hope when he mentioned the medical experts. For a brief moment, she even thought he might have a shred of decency left.
But now, she saw how wrong she had been.
Matthew stopped, his gaze narrowing as he turned to face her. His eyes flickered briefly to the necklace around her neck, its shine too bright to ignore.
“You have money?” He asked, his voice dripping with mockery. “Are you planning to sleep with Xavier Crawford? How much is he paying you for a night?”
For more than two months, Matthew had arranged for someone to keep an eye on Veronica and her phone. He was certain she hadn’t slept with Xavier, but the necklace and the gossip from the nurses had left him with no other conclusion. Veronica was clearly involved with him.
“You!” Veronica’s face flushed with outrage. She hadn’t expected Matthew’s mind to go straight to the gutter. She scoffed coldly, lifting her chin in defiance. “You’re right. Xavier gave me that money.”
She wasn’t sure where the anger came from, but something about the way Matthew looked at her made her snap. She adjusted the necklace around her collarbone, making sure it caught his eye. “This is the necklace Xavier gave me. I’m in a relationship with him. So, Young Master Matthew, please stay away from me. Otherwise, my boyfriend won’t let you off.”
Immediately after saying it, Veronica regretted her words. Admitting that she was with Xavier might make Matthew back off, but it also risked making him furious—and that could mean the end of her father’s chances of seeing those medical experts.
Matthew’s cold eyes flashed with a chill that sent a shiver down her spine. He stepped closer, reaching out to lift her chin with his fingers. His thumb brushed against her skin as he spoke, his voice low and threatening. “I’m warning you: stay away from Xavier Crawford. Otherwise, don’t blame me for what happens.”
“Wow, Young Master Matthew, you think you can control everything just because you have money and power? You tell me to stay away from him, but I won’t.”
Veronica was no pushover. Her stubbornness would only intensify when faced with someone like Matthew, who believed he could get whatever he wanted. Their personalities were bound to clash violently.
“Try me,” Matthew said, leaning even closer. Veronica felt his breath on her face, making her uncomfortable with how close he was. From an outside perspective, their proximity looked more than a little ambiguous.
But just as she started to pull back, Matthew’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. “If I find out again, I’ll break your leg.”
Veronica’s heart raced with disgust. “You’re insane,” she spat, her patience wearing thin. “If you don’t cure my dad, that’s fine. I’ll transfer him to another hospital.” Her voice was thick with frustration. “I’m done with your ridiculous threats.”
“You think you can escape from me?” Matthew asked, his tone cold and menacing.
Veronica crossed her arms, defiantly holding her ground. “These are my legs. I can go wherever I want, whenever I want.”
Her behavior was clearly beyond Matthew’s control, and that drove him mad with rage. He stepped forward and grabbed her collar, his grip tight. “You’re pregnant with my child. Do you really think you can do whatever you want?”
Veronica froze. She hadn’t heard that right, had she?
For the last month, she had rejected every thought of Matthew. She had been working part-time, trying to keep herself together after everything that had happened. And yet, Matthew had been watching her, planning all along. He was certain she had no interest in him and that she hadn’t had a miscarriage.
In fact, Matthew had been thinking that maybe it was time to put a child on her—and after the child was born, he’d give her some money to get her out of his life for good.
But now, hearing his words made it all too clear: Matthew had been playing some cruel game with her the entire time.
“What? Pregnant with your child?” Veronica stared at him, as though she couldn’t process it. “If you’re crazy, go see a psychiatrist.” Her voice trembled with both disbelief and anger. “Even if I was out of my mind, Matthew Kings, I would never be pregnant with your family’s child in my life.”
Matthew’s lips curled into a faint smile, as if amused by her defiance. “Oh? Is that so? Tell me, did you feel anything after the last miscarriage? Did your period ever come?”
His words echoed in her mind, and Veronica found herself at a loss for a response. It was true—she hadn’t felt anything from the miscarriage. She had heard that it would hurt, but she hadn’t experienced anything at all. And come to think of it, she hadn’t gotten her period either.
A feeling of dread washed over her. She started to panic, her mind racing.
A few days ago, she thought, I just assumed the abortion messed up my cycle, but…
“No,” she whispered to herself. “No, that’s impossible. I took birth control pills yesterday.”
Matthew didn’t hesitate to mock her further. “Is the medicine white and oval with a slightly sour taste?”
Veronica’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief. “H-How did you know?”
Matthew didn’t look the slightest bit surprised. He simply smiled, a faint smirk playing at the corners of his lips. “Because I ordered everyone from the Twilight Club to the Brocade Gardens to keep tabs on you.”
Veronica shook her head, the weight of his words crashing down on her. “That’s impossible… That’s impossible! I—I don’t have your child!” she stammered.
Matthew didn’t seem to care much about her denial. “This is a hospital, Veronica. We can always check. You can take a test, and we’ll know for sure whether you’re pregnant.”
“I don’t believe you,” she muttered, her voice shaky. “This is Saint Hospital. It’s run by your family. You could just fabricate the results.”
“Well,” Matthew said with a shrug, “it’s not that hard to confirm. You can always buy a pregnancy test, or we could even take you to the clinic and have a test done. You’ll know for sure.”
“Impossible! You liar…” Veronica couldn’t stop herself from muttering, though her mind was in turmoil.
She left him standing there, fuming inside. She had promised to transfer her father to another hospital, but at that moment, she couldn’t even think straight. She needed answers.
On her way home, she passed a pharmacy and almost instinctively turned in. She had no real desire to go through with it, but Matthew’s words were like a shadow in her mind, pushing her forward.
After some time, she found herself standing in her bathroom, pregnancy test strips in hand. She took the test, but the results only made her panic more.
Ten minutes later, a scream filled the air. “Matthew Kings, you beast…” she sobbed, her voice trembling with shock and anger.
She looked at the five or six strips on the counter—each one showing two bars. Positive. She was pregnant. The reality hit her like a freight train.
Still in disbelief, she rushed to a Chinese medicine clinic to get a second opinion. The result was the same.
With tears in her eyes, Veronica walked out of the clinic, her mind reeling. She sat on a bench nearby, staring blankly ahead, as though time had frozen around her.
After some time, a car pulled up in front of her, and the door opened. Matthew stepped out, walking toward her with his usual smug demeanor.
