Chapter 2
Veronica, a ninth-degree black belt in Taekwondo, tried to push Matthew away, but she was in no shape to fight him off. “Let go of me, you bastard!” she spat, struggling as she wriggled against him.
Matthew’s grip tightened. “How dare you play hard to get after drugging me,” he sneered.
“What are you talking about?” Veronica snapped, confused. “I’m here for the money, not whatever you’re imagining.”
She fought to break free, but as her fingers brushed against his skin, she realized how hot he was. Drugged. The word echoed in her mind, and with a jolt of realization, she understood what had happened. But by the time she tried to flee, it was too late. He held her fast, and in frustration, he shoved his necktie into her mouth, silencing her protests.
“Shut up,” he muttered.
That night, Matthew forced himself on Veronica. The drug clouded her mind, and by the time he finally relented, Veronica was unconscious, drifting in and out of tears.
Damn him! Was he this strong, or was that drug just that powerful? She couldn’t tell.
The next day, Veronica woke with a headache and an aching body, as if she’d been battered in a fight. She groggily shifted in bed, wincing at the sharp discomfort. Her body felt sticky, the aftermath of the night’s brutal events. She sat up, scanning the room. Matthew was gone, but there was a set of clean clothes placed neatly at the head of the bed.
After a quick shower, she walked out of the bedroom, not even bothering to wipe off her makeup, determined to find Matthew and demand an explanation.
However, as she stepped into the living room, she found an unfamiliar man sitting on the sofa.
“I’m Thomas Ritter, Young Master Matthew’s personal secretary,” he introduced himself coolly before Veronica could speak.
Fury bubbled inside her. “Where is Matthew Kings, that bastard? Is he just going to walk away from what he did to me?”
Thomas blinked, taken aback by her outburst. He didn’t argue, simply gestured to a box of pills on the coffee table. “My boss said you must either take the morning-after pill and leave Bloomstead, or… well, you don’t have much of a choice. You can decide, Miss Murphy.”
Miss Murphy? Veronica felt her stomach twist. He already knew her name. He must’ve done a background check. The realization hit her like a ton of bricks, and she shuddered at how cold and calculating Matthew was. All her bravado drained away.
She pursed her lips. “I need to see Matthew. I saved his life—how could he just forget that?”
Thomas’s face twisted in disdain. “Save his life? Spare me the lie. Do you think my boss is going to fall for that?”
“I’m telling the truth!” Veronica insisted, her voice rising in desperation. “It happened that day—”
“Miss Murphy,” Thomas cut her off, his patience wearing thin. “If you want it the hard way, I can oblige. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
At that moment, the elevator dinged, and the door slid open. Veronica expected to see Matthew, but instead, a regal silver-haired woman stepped out, flanked by two servants. She carried herself with a commanding presence that spoke of decades of authority.
Thomas bowed. “Good day, Old Mrs. Kings.”
The woman, Elizabeth Hutchinson, shot him a sharp look. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m handling some private matters on Young Master Matthew’s behalf, Old Mrs. Kings,” Thomas explained with a slight bow.
Elizabeth’s eyes flicked to the box of pills on the table. “Private matters, huh? Does that include putting the Kings family’s great-grandson at risk?”
Veronica froze. Great-grandson?
Her eyes followed Elizabeth’s gaze to the pills, and it dawned on her what the old woman meant. The bastard left something of his inside me, didn’t he?
“That’s what he wanted?” Elizabeth’s voice was cold and disdainful. “Tell that brat to come to me if he has any questions.”
