Chapter 44
“Madam, let’s talk about this later, okay? You need to rest for now,” Veronica urged. Though conflicted, she couldn’t help but feel proud to be on the receiving end of such affection.
Hearing Veronica’s words, Elizabeth immediately corrected her. “Don’t call me Madam anymore! Call me Grandma!”
Veronica chuckled at Elizabeth’s persistence. “Alright, Grandma,” she said with a smile. “Please rest. I’ll be leaving now.”
Matthew, wearing a more anxious expression, added, “The doctor said you should keep your talking to a minimum and rest as much as you can.”
Instead of responding with her usual patience, Elizabeth waved Matthew off. “Okay, okay. I got it. Now, get out.”
Without another word, Matthew stepped out of the ward and shut the door behind him. As soon as he saw Veronica waiting for the elevator in the corridor, he strode toward her and pulled her back before she could enter.
“What the hell are you doing, Matthew Kings?!” Veronica snapped, trying to free her arm from his grip.
He quietly dragged her toward the stairway and pressed her against the wall. “What do you want? Why did you approach Grandma?” he demanded.
Veronica was taken aback. “What do you mean, approach her? You’re delusional!” she retorted, then shoved her phone in his face. The video of her heroics played on the screen. “Take a proper look. This is the video I took when I saved her. I didn’t even know she was your grandmother until I flipped her over.”
Sarcastically, she added, “Am I a god or something? Do you think I can foresee the future?”
Matthew glanced at the screen before locking his eyes onto hers. His long fingers grabbed her chin, tilting her head back so she couldn’t look away. “Listen,” he said coldly, “watch your step now that you’re part of the family.” He leaned in closer. “If I find out you’re scheming behind Grandma’s back, I’ll make sure you regret it for the rest of your life.”
Veronica pushed him away, her voice rising with frustration. “You crazy prick! To you, everyone but Tiffany must be plotting something, right?”
Matthew’s words seemed to linger in the air for a moment. At the mention of Tiffany’s name, he recalled the details of the investigation Thomas had done on Veronica. Instead of answering her question, he shot one of his own. “How did you manage to swindle two million from the Larsons?”
Veronica froze. “You had me investigated?” she asked, her voice betraying surprise.
“Of course. How else would I know how evil you are?” Matthew replied matter-of-factly.
“Ill intentions?” Veronica sneered softly, growing more annoyed by the second. His accusations were getting more absurd by the minute, and she didn’t have the patience to continue arguing. Turning away, she tried to walk off.
He grabbed her by the collar, pulling her back. “Stay here. Grandma likes you.”
Veronica was beyond frustrated. “What about my job?” she shot back, incredulously. “You accuse me of having bad intentions, and now you want me to stay here and take care of Grandma? Matthew, that’s not how life works.”
Ignoring her sarcasm, he simply replied, “Do as I say.”
“Nope.” She stood her ground. “I need to go to work. I need the money.”
Matthew, however, didn’t back down. “I’ll pay you ten thousand a day.”
“Deal,” Veronica immediately agreed. “But you pay me first.”
He scoffed, “At the mention of money, you really show your true colors.”
Veronica rolled her eyes. “Who wouldn’t want money?” she retorted.
Annoyed by her arrogance, Matthew said nothing else, and they left the stairway in silence. Veronica informed him, “I’m going home for a bit. I’ll be back after I change into something more comfortable.”
Matthew nodded in silent agreement.
An hour later, Veronica returned to the hospital, her hair in a ponytail, wearing casual clothes. She was surprised to find Tiffany and Rachel already in the VIP room’s living area.
The news about Tiffany having a younger sister had been circulating since Veronica leaked it to the public. As expected, the Larsons had quickly erased the headlines from social media but didn’t offer any clarification.
“What are you doing here, Veronica Murphy?” Tiffany demanded. Her gaze flicked from Veronica to Matthew and back again, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
Rachel followed Tiffany’s lead, eyeing Veronica with a similar intensity.
Veronica’s heart skipped a beat. She needed to come up with a convincing answer. Claiming she worked as Elizabeth’s personal assistant seemed like the safest option. “Grandma hired me to—” she started.
Before she could finish, Matthew cut in. “She’s Grandma’s god-granddaughter.”
“Matthew! Shut up!” Veronica panicked, trying to stop him, but it was too late. Tiffany and Rachel had already processed the words.
Tiffany’s eyes widened in shock. “God-granddaughter?” she stammered.
Rachel let out a dry, awkward laugh. “What on earth is going on?”
The mother-daughter duo was seething with anger, but the person most irritated by the situation was Veronica. Her fists clenched as she glared at Matthew. Everything she had worked for, all the plans she had meticulously set up to drive the Larsons into a corner, had just been thrown off track.
Her plan to use herself as bait to get the Larsons to make a fatal mistake was now ruined, and she was livid. But then, Matthew’s cold gaze met hers, and she quickly realized she needed to play it cool. With a forced smile, she rubbed her forehead. “Stop it, Matthew. It hasn’t been confirmed yet,” she said, trying to downplay his revelation.
Since Tiffany and Rachel had already heard about Elizabeth adopting a god-granddaughter, Veronica decided it was best to roll with it. Perhaps there was still a way to use this to her advantage.
Tiffany, however, wasn’t buying it. She stepped in front of Veronica with a smirk. “What a wonderful surprise!” she mocked, her voice dripping with insincerity. “Congratulations, Veronica! We’ll be living together from now on.”
Her back to Matthew, Tiffany didn’t bother hiding her hatred for Veronica. The animosity was palpable as she shot a venomous glare at her.
