Chapter 41
After leaving the Twilight Club, Veronica let out a sigh of relief. The matter regarding the hospital costs had finally been settled, and she could focus on the next phase of her plan—dealing with the Larsons. Once she resolved that, she could finally leave Bloomstead and find a proper job to support her adoptive parents. They had raised her with love and care, and she owed them everything.
Her phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. It was Tiffany. Veronica’s brow furrowed as she answered the call.
“Veronica, what the hell are you thinking? Do you want to ruin the Larsons?” Tiffany’s voice was shrill and unhinged, completely at odds with her usual composed demeanor.
Veronica held the phone slightly away from her ear, waiting for Tiffany to finish. Once the ranting paused, Veronica spoke calmly, feigning innocence. “What? I don’t get you.”
Tiffany’s voice rose with fury. “Stop pretending! The pictures on Twitter came from that day when you donated bone marrow to Randy. Who else could have exposed them other than you?”
Veronica could hear the desperation in Tiffany’s voice. “You should’ve known better than to expose your identity. You’re digging your own grave, Veronica Murphy.”
Veronica’s expression darkened. “Dig my own grave? Are you planning to stage another car accident to kill me, like you did to my parents?”
The words stung, and Tiffany went silent for a beat, caught off guard. But soon, she sneered. “Since you already know the truth, you’d better stay in your place. If not, don’t be surprised if you’re not able to attend your parents’ funeral when they pass away.”
“My parents? Are you referring to Floch Larson or Rachel Zimmerman?” Veronica’s tone was razor-sharp.
Tiffany’s face turned crimson with rage. “Shut up! I’m the only daughter of my parents! Who do you think you are? You’re just a piece of trash abandoned by our family!”
“If I’m trash, then what are you?” Veronica countered, her voice unwavering. “Tiffany Larson, don’t forget we share the same mother.”
Tiffany was so furious that she could barely form words. Veronica’s taunt had hit its mark. A bitter laugh escaped Veronica. “Listen closely, Tiffany Larson. I have the means to expose those pictures. If you lay a finger on my adoptive parents again, I will make sure the Larsons go down with me.”
Her voice was cold, her smile vanishing as a look of ruthlessness took over her face.
The photos that had surfaced on Twitter were blurry, but they were enough to cause a stir. One showed Veronica standing next to Tiffany, and the other captured the moment she donated bone marrow to Randy. Both had been taken from CCTV footage, not high quality, but enough for Veronica’s face to be recognized.
With one final word, Veronica hung up. She knew Tiffany would be seething in anger now, and she couldn’t help but smirk. The recording of their conversation was automatically saved, a crucial piece of leverage in case things got worse.
At Dragon’s Creek Villa, Tiffany slammed her phone down onto the table, her rage spilling over. She trembled with fury, her hands clenched into fists.
Floch, who had been sitting nearby, looked up, sensing something was wrong. “What happened?”
Tiffany turned on him, her voice shaking with anger. “What else? That b*tch Veronica actually threatened me! She said that if we touch her adoptive parents, she’ll expose her identity!”
She was practically seething, the fear of losing everything she’d worked for consuming her. Being engaged to Matthew had been her greatest achievement, and Veronica’s existence was the biggest threat to that.
Floch, who had always prided himself on being level-headed, now looked uneasy. “Wait… you mean Veronica already knows we were behind the car accident?”
Tiffany’s face twisted with frustration. “Yes! That’s exactly what I mean! She found out, and now she’s going to ruin everything!”
Rachel, who had been listening silently, her face pale, spoke up, her voice filled with panic. “Floch, what should we do?”
Floch stood up, his face hardening. “What do you mean, Mom? If we let Veronica live, she’ll drive us to our deaths. We can’t let that happen.”
Tiffany grabbed her father’s hand, tears in her eyes. “Dad, you have to help me! You can’t let her expose me. You can’t let her ruin everything.”
Floch narrowed his eyes, his gaze cold and calculating. “Tiffany’s right. We can’t let Veronica live.”
Meanwhile, in Matthew’s private condominium on the 38th floor of the Twilight Club, Matthew stood by the French window, his cigarette burning between his fingers. The city lights flickered below him, but his mind was far from the view.
The door opened with a soft knock, and Thomas stepped inside, holding a stack of papers. “Young Master Matthew, we’ve finished investigating the matter you asked about.”
Matthew didn’t turn around but spoke in a low voice. “Spit it out.”
Thomas hesitated for a moment before replying, “The Larson family transferred 2 million to Veronica’s account not long ago. Afterward, she transferred about 80 thousand to a private investigator. A few hours ago, two popular Twitter influencers transferred 280 thousand each to her account.”
Matthew raised an eyebrow, intrigued. This wasn’t what he’d expected. He walked over and took the document from Thomas, scanning the information.
“Why did the Larsons and the Twitter influencers transfer money to her?” Matthew asked, his voice sharp.
Thomas looked at the paper again before answering, “It’s likely that Veronica sold the Larson family’s secrets to the influencers. Those two were the ones who posted the news about the Larsons earlier.”
Matthew felt a flicker of surprise. Veronica had played him. She had used the Larsons’ dirty laundry to make a profit, but what was her endgame?
“Go find out why the Larsons transferred 2 million to her,” Matthew ordered, his expression unreadable.
Thomas nodded and left the room, leaving Matthew alone with his thoughts.
Matthew stood still for a moment, reflecting on the few interactions he’d had with Veronica. There was something about her—something unpredictable and captivating. His thoughts wandered back to the first time Tiffany and Veronica had met. It was always Tiffany who initiated the conversations. Veronica had never seemed particularly interested in her sister, which only made Matthew more curious.
And now, with everything that had happened, Matthew began to entertain a thought he hadn’t considered before. What if Veronica really is Tiffany’s sister? The idea lingered in his mind, but he quickly dismissed it, shaking his head. But she’s so… ugly.
His lips curled into a small smile, the thought of Veronica provoking his curiosity even more. Interesting.
