Chapter 6
Tiffany was caught off guard by Veronica’s swift reaction. Before she could even gather herself, Veronica had slapped her twice across the face. The stinging sensation in her ears made her see red, but she couldn’t afford to make a scene—not with Veronica standing there. Gritting her teeth, Tiffany muttered under her breath, “Shut your mouth! Who are you calling ‘sis’?”
Veronica’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Lucky for you, you kept quiet earlier. If you’d tried to speak up, well, I would’ve had no choice but to prepare coffins for your adoptive parents.”
Tiffany’s eyes widened in shock. She had been expecting Veronica to make a scene, to blurt out the truth and ruin everything. But Veronica had played her hand with such calmness that it left Tiffany momentarily speechless.
“Ha!” Veronica’s voice was laced with sarcasm. “When I saved Young Master Matthew, he promised me a reward—100 million. I’ll give you a 50% discount, so if you want me to keep quiet, you’ll have to pay me 50 million. Otherwise…” Veronica’s eyes sparkled with a mix of mischief and danger. “When Young Master Matthew learns the truth, as your full sister, I’ll be happy to attend your funeral every year.”
Tiffany’s expression twisted with rage. “Fifty million? Dream on!” she spat, barely able to contain her fury.
Veronica raised an eyebrow. “Whether I’m dreaming or not is none of your concern. But if you don’t play along, I’ll make sure your little dream of becoming Mrs. Matthew Kings stays exactly that—a dream.”
Tiffany clenched her fists, seething, but unable to argue back. Meanwhile, in the inner room, Elizabeth was discussing the situation with Matthew.
“I saw Veronica’s blood on the bed sheet,” Elizabeth began, her voice heavy with implication. “She was a virgin. Now that you’ve been with her, you need to take responsibility.”
Matthew, who had initially believed Veronica drugged him, now understood that it had been Elizabeth’s doing. Still, he wasn’t convinced that Veronica was entirely blameless. “I already have a girlfriend,” Matthew said, his tone cold. “As for Veronica, we can offer her a compensation package.”
Elizabeth’s sharp eyes narrowed. “Compensation? Do you really think that’s enough? Don’t be foolish, Matthew. You’re not getting off that easily. I can see through her intentions. She’s only here to ‘take the place’ of your intended. You need to deal with her properly.”
Matthew’s expression darkened. “What do you want me to do, Grandma?”
Elizabeth’s lips twisted into a scheming smile. “Simple. Just wait. In two months, you’ll marry the one who gets pregnant first.”
Matthew blinked, stunned by the suddenness of her demand. “What? You’re not even going to ask my opinion on this?”
“Don’t give me that look,” Elizabeth snapped. “Feelings can develop. Besides, it’s better this way. Veronica may not be the most attractive girl, but that’s a blessing in disguise. You don’t want any trouble with a beauty, do you?”
Matthew’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t respond to her suggestion. Elizabeth seemed to think Veronica’s “lack of beauty” would make things easier for him.
“We’ll see how things play out,” Matthew muttered, irritation rising. He was done with this conversation for now.
Elizabeth, sensing his frustration, added quickly, “Just take Tiffany and leave for now. Veronica will stay here for a few days. She needs time to recover and calm her heart. After all, the morning-after pill would only be effective within 72 hours. So, we have a little time.”
As soon as Matthew heard this, his face went cold. Without another word, he exited the room, his mind reeling from the conversation.
Tiffany, waiting anxiously outside, perked up as Matthew emerged. “Finished talking to your grandma, Matthew?”
But Matthew didn’t acknowledge her. He walked right past Tiffany, heading straight for Veronica. His grip was firm as he pinched her jaw and lifted her head slightly, his eyes cold as he stared down at her. “I’m warning you, don’t try to manipulate Grandma, or you’ll regret it. Got it?”
Veronica flinched at the pressure on her jaw but refused to show weakness. With a sharp hiss, she shoved him away. “Do you think I want to be here? I’d rather leave this place!”
However, as she glanced at Tiffany’s envious expression, something clicked. She quickly changed her tone. “But if your grandmother insists, what can I do?”
Tiffany’s face twisted with jealousy. How dare she act like she’s already part of this family?! But Tiffany didn’t realize how much she was overplaying her part. She was only pretending to be Matthew’s girlfriend, yet her envy toward Veronica was unmistakable.
Veronica’s lips curved into a sly smile, her eyes glinting with mischief. “If I get pregnant, I won’t be able to get rid of you, even if I wanted to.” She paused dramatically, turning to Elizabeth, who had just come out of the inner room. “I suppose if your grandmother insists on me marrying you, I’ll have no choice, will I?”
Tiffany’s jealousy hit a boiling point, and she could barely contain her rage. How dare you seduce my boyfriend, you btch?!* But Tiffany didn’t see that it was her own role as Matthew’s “girlfriend” that was crumbling.
Matthew’s lips curled into a smirk. “We’ll see how confident you are three days from now,” he warned Veronica, before turning away.
Elizabeth’s voice rang out, stern and protective. “Matthew, watch your mouth!”
Matthew’s lips twisted into a brief smile as he turned away, releasing Veronica. “Let’s go, Tiffany.”
Tiffany’s frustration was palpable, but she swallowed it down, nodding politely to Elizabeth. “Well, Old Mrs. Kings, I’ll be leaving with Matthew now.”
“Uh-huh,” Elizabeth responded noncommittally.
As Tiffany followed Matthew out, Veronica watched them go, her victorious smile fading as reality set in. I might’ve gotten a moment of satisfaction, but now I’m really in deep trouble. I’ve angered both Tiffany and Matthew. What have I done?
