Chapter 51
At 5:00 AM, Veronica was transferred to Saint Hospital, her exhaustion catching up with her as the early morning hours passed. She didn’t resist the move, knowing full well that Tiffany was also admitted there. If she was in the same hospital, it would be the perfect opportunity to have a ‘talk’ with her. Gathering more evidence, after all, was her main goal.
Though she was incredibly tired, she couldn’t bring herself to sleep. The Larson family had already tried to harm her once—she had no doubt they would try again, and she wasn’t about to let her guard down.
By 8:00 AM, Veronica’s eyelids were heavy with fatigue, but she still didn’t dare to rest.
It was then that Matthew appeared in her ward.
“How are you feeling?” His voice was cool, almost casual, but his presence filled the room with a quiet intensity. He was dressed impeccably, his short hair perfectly groomed, his suit sharp and pristine. The man looked like his usual cold, elegant self.
Veronica’s gaze immediately fell on the gauze wrapped around the back of his hand. “Are you hurt?” she asked, her voice surprisingly calm.
Her tone was softer than usual, but it wasn’t surprising. After all, Matthew had rushed into a burning building to save her the previous day. She had no words to fully express her gratitude for his actions.
Matthew glanced down at the bandages on his hand, almost indifferent to the injury. “I’ve already had someone look into the two people who kidnapped you yesterday,” he said, his voice steady and businesslike.
Veronica’s response was a simple, “Oh,” though her thoughts were far from simple. She knew full well that her men had already taken care of the two kidnappers. Still, she felt the need to thank him. “Thank you for what you did yesterday,” she said sincerely.
Matthew, sitting in the nursing chair beside her bed, couldn’t help but notice how exhausted she looked. Her eyes kept fluttering shut, though she fought to stay awake. He hadn’t realized it until now, but as he studied her face, the firelight still lingered in his memory—how fragile and vulnerable she had looked in the midst of all that chaos.
“Why did you show up at my house?” Veronica asked after a beat.
Matthew tilted his head slightly, his cold eyes never leaving her. “Xavier told me you were missing, so I came to find you.”
Veronica nodded, though she still had more questions. “Why did you save me yesterday?”
She expected some kind of explanation, a reason, or at least an acknowledgment of what he had done. Instead, Matthew’s response was blunt and dismissive. “It was a fireman who saved you.”
Her brow furrowed in confusion. “It wasn’t you?” She couldn’t understand why Matthew was refusing to admit it.
He stared at her, his expression cold. “You’re not worthy of me saving you.”
His words, sharp as they were, made her pause. She stared at him, trying to make sense of his indifference. But then her eyes fell on the bandaged hand again. If it wasn’t him who saved her, why did he have an injury that clearly came from the fire?
Matthew stood up abruptly, his face hardening once more. Without another word, he turned and left the room, leaving Veronica to her thoughts.
Outside the ward, Thomas, who had been waiting by the door, followed Matthew. He couldn’t help but voice his confusion. “Young Master Matthew, you clearly saved Miss Murphy yesterday. Why won’t you admit it?”
Matthew paused mid-step, turning to fix Thomas with a cold, piercing gaze. It was enough to make Thomas swallow nervously.
“This matter ends here,” Matthew said quietly but firmly, a warning in his voice. His tone left no room for further discussion.
With that, Matthew turned and walked away, leaving Thomas to wonder about the unspoken emotions that were clearly at play.
Thomas knew better than to probe further. His boss was stubborn, and Matthew’s pride would never allow him to admit something as simple as the fact that he had acted out of concern for Veronica.
As Matthew entered Elizabeth’s ward, he found her lying in bed, receiving an intravenous drip. She looked up at him, eyes sharp as ever.
“What happened to you? Why is your hand injured?” she asked, her tone tinged with concern.
“I accidentally burned myself,” he replied, brushing off her concern.
Elizabeth sighed, clearly frustrated. “You’re an adult now. Be more careful.” Then, she paused, eyeing the room with a keen look. “Where’s Veronica? She promised she would come visit me.”
Matthew stiffened at the mention of Veronica. He glanced away, his jaw tight. “She’s on a business trip,” he said, trying to sound casual, though he knew the lie wouldn’t hold for long.
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow, not convinced. “Business trip? Veronica doesn’t have a job. Why would she go on a business trip?”
“She’s working at Xavier’s company now,” Matthew said quickly, hoping that would satisfy her.
Elizabeth’s eyes widened. “She’s working at Xavier’s company? Oh my, that boy isn’t reliable at all. He might end up deceiving her! Why don’t you arrange for her to work in your company?” she asked, clearly more concerned about Veronica’s well-being than anything else.
Matthew was caught off guard by her bluntness. “Not everyone can join the Spinfluence Group,” he said coldly, trying to downplay the situation.
But Elizabeth wasn’t buying it. “What are you saying? Veronica is my goddaughter. She should work wherever she wants! Are you saying she isn’t good enough for your company?”
Matthew was momentarily speechless. It wasn’t often Elizabeth got so worked up over something like this, but here she was, defending Veronica as if she were her own daughter.
“After you’re discharged from the hospital, you can do whatever you want,” he muttered, clearly not wanting to get into another argument.
“That’s more like it,” Elizabeth replied smugly, giving him a pointed look as if she had won their little verbal sparring match.
Just as the tension in the room began to ease, there was a knock on the door.
A bodyguard entered, and with a respectful bow, he addressed Matthew. “Young Master Matthew, Miss Murphy has requested to be discharged from the hospital.”
